Uncle Drew vs the Brow

The Boston Celtics are playing really well as of late.  They are currently on a 6 straight game winning streak.  Boston is starting to look like the juggernaut that all C’s fans were hoping to witness.  It seems like the guys are finding their roles that will give them the best chance to win.  I also think that the team overall is benefiting from sitting players out.  More pieces of the pie are able to go around when there are less people sitting at the table.  Things are looking pretty bright for the Celtics so, I’d like to see if I can stir the pot a little.  When things are going smoothly in the sports world, it is a perfect time to start an off the field, or in this case, court discussion.

This week the Celtics took on the New Orleans Pelicans (I still think that team name stinks) and their superstar forward Anthony Davis.  There have been trade rumors involving the Celtics and Davis for a couple of years now.  So obviously these early season match ups have sparked a bit of a debate in the Boston area…”As a Celtic’s fan, who would you rather have Kyrie Irving or Anthony Davis? “

For argument's sake, pretend it is a 1 for 1 swap.  You can keep and ultimately re-sign Kyrie Irving or you can swap him for the services of “the Brow” Anthony Davis.  Boston’s surrounding players, coaches and executives are exactly the way they are now.  Only difference is that Davis is starting for the home team and Irving is in New Orleans.  Now given this extra moment to think…who would you rather have?

I’d like to start with “the Brow” Anthony Davis.  Right off the bat, I must state that I believe he is one of the most talented players in the entire league.  I love watching his game.  Davis is a completely dominating force when he is on the court.  He is quick (not as quick as the guy I’ll mention later) and smooth and can absolutely take over any given game.  If the NBA held a fantasy draft, the Brow would be seriously considered for the number 1 overall pick.  For the record, I do usually take him whenever I do any NBA 2K fantasy drafts.

Davis is just so good at basketball.  He just dropped 41 points on this Celtics team in real life.  Davis is incredibly agile for a big man in the NBA.  Standing close to 7 feet tall, you can’t help be mesmerized by his athletic game.  He can shoot, he can pass, and he scores in every way possible. And he may be the best defender around.  Given his super human wingspan he can block any players’ shot.  He must be so difficult to play against.  Davis is as tall as almost anyone that will be on the court and will always be among the most athletic.

Davis’s only real weak spot is his health.  Although he hasn’t had major injuries, he does leave a lot of games early.  He is also known to miss multiple games throughout the season.  His injury history isn’t bad enough to turn you away from having Davis on your team.  Anthony Davis is a generational talent.  There is zero doubt that Davis is the type of player that you build a franchise around.

Kyrie Irving is the best player that the Celtics have had since Paul Pierce.  The former number 1 overall pick is one of the most skilled players in the NBA.  Irving is an alpha dog on the court.  Whenever I get to watch the Celtics in person I am always keeping my eyes on number 11.  Kyrie is so talented he makes moves that look like they should come with a hype man on the court.  Uncle Drew has moves that would rival those done on the old AND 1 mix tapes.  He is electric with the ball in his hands.  Irving’s dribbling skills are amazing.  I don’t think there is a better dribbler than Irving in the league.  His quickness is also second to none.  Kyrie is so fast when he takes the ball to the hoop.  He can also do so many things to create his own shot.  Not only does he have the skill, he is the guy you want with the ball with a game on the line.

Irving also has a championship pedigree.  He hit the clutch shot to win the championship, not LeBron.  Speaking of Kyrie’s shot, I think he has one of the smoothest in the league.  I remember when he was a rookie or sophomore he hit ten straight 3’s in the All-Star Friday night game.   It may have been an exhibition game but that was still very impressive and that hasn’t changed at all.  Irving can shoot the lights out.

I like having Kyrie Irving on the team.  I would say he is my favorite player on this team.  I really think he is a great player.  I mean he is usually the best player on the court. Kyrie has the skill set to carry his team to a win, and I like that he does that for my favorite team.  He is the leader of this team.  By most reports he was looking for a trade from Cleveland because he was ready to lead his own team and he could never do that if LeBron James is on that team.  When he came to Boston I believed he and Brad Stevens would be the next great NBA player and coach pairing.  I still think that could be the case, but it is not really a major factor in the Irving v Davis debate because Davis could be a great match with Stevens too.

I also like that Kyrie Irving has a bit of star power.  He has his own signature Nikes.  I personally really like his sneakers.  Maybe after Santa brings the Red Sox some players he can bring me a sweet pair of Kyrie’s signature kicks.  Irving is also a movie star.  Even if you have never watched a Celtics game you may know Kyrie from his movie Uncle Drew.  It is also possible you don’t recognize him from the movie either but that is because of his old man make up.  It wasn’t a bad movie either, highly watchable.  He has all the factors to be “the guy” on a championship winning squad.  If Kyrie Irving is on your team you are in great shape.  In my opinion he is a real franchise guy.

So…who would I rather have?  The clear answer is both.  I’d want to have them both.  Irving and Davis could be the next legendary duo in NBA history.  It wouldn’t be easy to get Davis onto the Celtics, but I think Ainge would have the stones to get it done.  They have the players to make a deal like that happen.  Any hypothetical deal would start with Brown, Rozier and a few picks (which they have.)  Boston would have to add the last year and a half of Al Horford’s contract, and New Orleans would have to add some scrap to balance the money, but a deal could get done.  Would I be getting way too greedy to ask Santa for Davis too?  Probably, but I have been a good boy this year, so who knows.  A trade for Davis is what I am hoping for BUT that is a bad answer to the original question.

I’ll play the game and answer the question.  Of the two elite, franchise players, I’m taking… Kyrie Irving.  I know Davis is great and maybe the most talented big man in the entire NBA, but Irving has the championship experience.  He helped the Cavs beat the Warriors to win it all just a few years ago.  As I mentioned before, he hit the most clutch shot in the Finals.  Having a leader who has been there before cannot be understated.  Both are among the best players in the league.  Both players are franchise talents that you want to build around.  I think both guys are capable of taking their team to the championship.  Ultimately I’d take the player who has been there and done that.  I’d prefer Irving because he has talent and championship pedigree.  Even Irving’s biggest downfall, which is his injuries, is also a worry when you are talking about Davis so that balances out.  The Brow is an elite player, but when you take everything into consideration, I’d choose Uncle Drew A.K.A. Kyrie Irving.
