Boston Celtics' New Years Check Up

2018 was one of the most memorable calendar years for me personally.  I am so incredibly fortunate to have had the year that I just had.  It was a year that was filled with so many amazing memories and monumental events.  I started writing for the Boston Sports Syndicate and that has been a major positive in my life.  This is a great bunch and I am very grateful to be a part of it.

My favorite team in any sport, the Red Sox, hoisted another World Series trophy.  Watching your team win a championship will never get old.  The Boston Red Sox weren’t the only team to win a ship that is near and dear to my heart.  My fantasy football team, CalmCool CoryMatthews, won the championship in my longest and most cherished league.  It is not easy to win in that league, mainly due to the extremely knowledgeable guys that occupy the league, so winning is always a big deal.

Everything I mentioned was fantastic, but it all takes a back seat to the best thing to happen to me this year.  It is actually the best thing that has ever happened to me in my existence.  I was able to marry the love of my life.  I am one lucky son of a gun, no doubt about that.  Looking back on 2018, I can’t help but view this past year as my favorite.  What a year it was for your boy, but it has also been an eventful year for the home basketball team, the Boston Celtics.  Oh that’s right, I’m bringing the segues to 2019.

This past year has been a bit of a roller coaster ride for the Celtics.  It was filled with some highs, some lows, and plenty of hype looking towards the future.  This past NBA season ended with a loss, but fans still felt like they had taken the next step in the evolution of this squad.  They made it the deepest in the playoffs as they ever had being led by Brad Stevens.  Even with Daniel Theis, Gordon Hayward and Kyrie Irving out with injuries, they were a game away from playing in the NBA Finals.

Throughout the season, C’s fans were able to watch Jayson Tatum play way beyond his age. Everyone witnessed players like Terry Rosier, Marcus Smart, and Jaylen Brown all take that next step in their development.  It is never good to lose the last game of your season, but this loss came with a silver lining.  The 2017-18 season made Celtics fans believe that championships were a matter of "when" and not "if".

Even in the NBA off season, Celtics’ players were still in the headlines.  The team’s star player, Kyrie Irving, was releasing a movie.  His movie goes by the name Uncle Drew.  Have you seen it?  I hear it’s not all that bad.  I wonder if Jayson Tatum saw it.  It may have been tough considering he spent most of his time training with Kobe Bryant.  I’m sure he made some time to support his teammate in between training sessions with the Black Mamba.

There were also many, many…many videos of Gordon Hayward showing off his recovery.  Hayward was rehabbing, Tatum was training, Irving was standing in as a movie star, and Jaylen Brown, well, he was doing a fair bit of talking.  In a couple interviews Brown was telling anyone who would listen that the Celtics were on the verge of becoming the next basketball dynasty.  He mentioned that they would win five championships in six years.  That may have just been confident ramblings of an excited young man, but it didn’t sit well with hard-nosed Boston sports fans.  Regardless of the championship talk, most in the basketball world were very excited to see what the guys in green had in store.

So far the 2018-2019 season has been a bit of a head scratcher for fans.  With the hype getting so big, I would have to think that people were expecting phenomenal things from Boston.  But instead they are just getting pretty good.  The addition of Hayward isn’t coming along as swimmingly as everyone had hoped.  And Brown isn’t playing as well as he had shown last year.  It is always tough when the guy who did most of the talking is the guy leaving more to be desired.

For the record, I was against the idea of moving Jaylen Brown for Kawhi Leonard…I have since switched sides on that discussion, but that’s neither here nor there.  Even with their fair share of issues the Celtics are smack dab in the middle of the playoff picture.  When 2018 came to an end, Boston held a 21-15 record, but they have won both of the games that they have played in 2019.  Overall 2018 was a solid year for the Celtics.  We will just have to sit back, relax and watch to see what 2019 brings to the Boston Celtics.

In just over a month the NBA trade deadline will be here.  Over the last handful of seasons, the activity around the trade deadline has increased.  Should Danny Ainge look to make a move?  I think so.  Rumors haven’t started circulating just yet, so I don’t really know who will be available.  Truth be told, I’m not really hoping that the Celtics bring someone in.  I think it’s more important to subtract from this roster.  There just haven’t been enough minutes to go around to everyone.  I think it will do Boston a lot of good to shed some minutes.  The best way to do this would be to take multiple players and move them for a single player in return.  If that’s not an option, they could always get draft compensation, which would really send a message to the team.  Addition by subtraction, I suppose.

As of now the Celtics are in the middle of the playoff picture.  They are currently the number five seed.  That is a far cry from where everyone thought they would be.  Now there is still a lot of season left, so I wouldn’t be shocked if the Celtics end up at the top of the standings.  They have a great roster and the coach to go with their talent, so it’s absolutely within the realm of possibilities that Boston claims one of the top spots heading into the postseason.  The C’s are less than 5 games back from the current top seeded Milwaukee Bucks, so with about half the season left to go I expect Brad Stevens and Co. to make a legit run at a top seed.

I can’t write about the possibilities of 2019 and leave you without one of my predictions.  Let me rub my crystal ball, shake my magic eight ball, and channel Mattradamus so I can drop some predictions.  I predict that the Celtic’s continue to drag their feet for the next couple of weeks keeping them in the middle of the pack.  Danny Ainge will then make a trade to shake things up.  Nothing major but he will help Brad Stevens with the surplus of minutes by moving someone in the rotation.

The shakeup from the GM will ignite this team and they will play up to their ability.  The Celtics players will receive the message and win a lot more than they lose.  Like a lot a lot more.  At the end of the regular season, the Boston Celtics will win their division and capture the number 2 seed heading into the playoffs.  You will have to continue to check out articles from the Boston Sports Syndicate to check out my playoff preview when that time comes…
