Is Kyrie Irving Full of You Know What?

Yes! End of article…I’m kidding.

The Boston Celtics acquired Kyrie Irving from the Cleveland Cavaliers in August 2017.  The trade came after Irving voiced his desire to be the alpha of his own team.  That was never going to happen in Cleveland with LeBron James on the roster.  When the trade hit the news wire, I was just wrapping up a family softball game.  Side note…hey Desrosiers clan, let’s do that again.  The moment I looked at my phone and saw the news, needless to say I was pumped.  I have always liked Kyrie Irving.  I really enjoyed watching him at Duke and when he was drafted to Cleveland he became one of my favorite players in the Association.  So you can imagine my excitement when he was dealt to Boston.

When Kyrie was brought aboard I obviously believed he was more than capable of being their leader.  Irving is a bit of a weird guy.  At times he came across as the college professor type, but I still thought he would be a good fit for the Celtics.  If you can remember when Jaylen Brown was drafted, he mentioned that he was excited to indulge in the education Boston has to provide.  Clearly a different answer than most sports fans are used to.
Flash forward to today.  It is obvious that Brown is a smart dude.  Jaylen was recently elected as an NBPA Vice President.  Maybe I’m wrong, but that sounds pretty special.

Last year Boston selected Jayson Tatum in the 1st round of the draft.  When Tatum was introduced he talked about working towards the next Celtics’ championship and seemed to have a businesslike approach.  Both are characteristics that matched his teammates Marcus Smart, Al Horford and the city of Boston as a whole.  Then Irving was added and I figured his peculiar ways would translate well with this roster.  Irving would talk life and theorize with Brown and get to work with Tatum, Smart, Horford and coach Brad Stephens.  I envisioned Irving taking this team to the next level as a leader on and off the court.

Around the trade deadline of this year things seemed to get awkward between Irving and the Boston media.  There were trade rumors swirling about Anthony Davis being dealt to LA, or maybe Boston come summertime.  Would Kyrie ghost on the Celtics to join Kevin Durant in New York?  Maybe Irving would ultimately team up with LeBron and AD in Los Angeles?  The rumors were everywhere.

On February 1st Irving spoke to the local media.  He said he would do whatever was best for him next year.  He stated that he didn’t owe anyone anything.  These statements came as a bit of shock to Boston fans.  Probably because it was just a few months earlier Irving shouted “If you guys will have me back, I plan on re-signing here next year” to season ticket holders.  I get it, people can change their minds, but why say anything if you’re not positive?

This past weekend was the NBA All-Star game.  The festivities seemed to be a success for the NBA.  In my opinion Major League Baseball could take some notes.  But that is a Syndicate article for another day.  Stay tuned. ;)

Kyrie was selected to the All-Star Team.  Congrats to you sir.  Being an all-star is usually a positive thing for your home fans.  But I think in Boston’s case it was a bit of a head scratcher.  After making such a stink to the media because they asked him if he was going to join up with Durant or Bron or Davis, it certainly seemed like Irving wanted to stay close to KD.  If you are familiar with the show “New Girl,” this move is called the Joe Biden.  If you don’t know what that means, New Girl is on Netflix.  I think I even saw a picture where Irving was the only NBA player on the court when Durant accepted his MVP trophy.  Perhaps that picture was doctored or presented to prove a point, but I think it is safe to say that Irving wouldn’t hate being coworkers with Durant.

In Irving’s most recent interviews it doesn’t feel like he is sure he wants to resign in Boston.  After hearing his statements I no longer believe Irving will be happy long term with the Celtics.  I think that if Kyrie Irving truly wanted to lead a squad the Celtics would be the ideal situation.  I understand he cannot sign an extension before July because he’d lose out on a bunch of money, but his tone wouldn’t change if he wanted to stay.  Instead it sounds like he is highlighting himself for the open market.

Fans and media members are growing frustrated with Irving.  Could his teammates be feeling the same way?  I mean, the team isn’t performing as they were supposed to.  And all of a sudden it sounds like Irving is unsure of his commitment and he is calling out his teammates in the media.  I don’t think it makes sense that Irving mentioned that his teammates don’t understand what it takes to win.  They were a win away from the Finals when Irving was on the sidelines.  Well not on the sidelines, because he didn’t travel with the team for Game 7.

There was a lot of hype for the Celtics in the pre season and Irving was ready to lead the way.  He was positive and eager to teach the younger players.  He even claimed that he would be back next year.  After the all-star break the mood has swayed.  The team is still good, but not as good as they thought they would be.  And to add gas to the fire, New York now has enough money to sign two max contracts in the offseason.  The vibes around the Celtic’s aren’t as glowing as they should be.  After all Boston is playoff bound.  Unfortunately for the team, the "will Irving leave or will he stay" narrative is going to stick around for the rest of the season.

Personally, I think that is great.  And, if Irving has ambitions beyond the game of basketball, I hope him the best in whatever endeavor he pursues.  But those characteristics shouldn’t spill into your basketball career.  Maybe I’m wrong, but you can just play and enjoy your time in sports then write books on philosophy, star in movies and change the world after your career is over.  Whenever athletes say one thing then act like they never did it always upsets the fans.  And there is no doubt Irving’s attitude has changed when it comes to his long term relationship with the Celtics.

Who knows, maybe this was just all part of the NBA soap opera.  And it is possible Irving calling out his team will be the rally that marches right into the Finals.  Another possibility is that Irving teams up with Durant in New York next year.  Completely flip flopping on his aspirations of being the franchise player.  The NBA is as much as a reality show as it is a sports league.  Like a wise man once said on a fantastic Boston Sports podcast “the NBA is a JOKE!”  And maybe Irving ultimately stays with Boston and the marriage Danny Ainge spoke about was true.  But either way, my man Kyrie Irving is full of…
