Sitting in Trader Danny's Seat

We are just days away from the NBA’s trade deadline.  Teams are scouring the market to see if there are any available players that they can acquire for the stretch run.  I love all trade deadlines.  I am a front office dork and I will follow as much trade rumors as possible.  So it’s a given that with basketball’s deadline closing in I was going to write about it.

Before I fully dive in I have to vent a little bit.  Like I mentioned, I love when teams make trades.  But I hate that players in the NBA are bullying their organizations to go wherever they want.  I understand that historically the teams have had all the leverage in where a player plays.  And maybe it is a good thing that the guys who put the butts in the seats are doing what is best for their lives.  All that makes sense, and I can’t disagree with it, but I can hate it with a fiery passion.

Along with their agents, franchise caliber players are colluding with their agents to go to the team they desire most.  Make no mistake about it, it is collusion.  Players and agents are working behind the scenes to pressure organizations so they can be dealt to the team they want.  Anthony Davis and his agent, Rich Paul, are demanding a trade right now because Davis wants to team up with LeBron James in LA.  Guess who’s James’ agent?  Rich Paul.

LeBron’s new team isn’t performing as well as James might have hoped.  So he can just have his agent convince Davis that LA is the best fit?  Seems fishy to me, but it isn’t breaking any NBA rules - so what can you do?  It feels extra sleazy because everyone in the NBA community knows that Boston can offer the most.  So if Rich Paul doesn’t want the Celtics in the race for Davis, then now is the time for the Lakers to attack.  And they are even using the Brows’ dad to add pressure to the Pelican’s organization to move his son ASAP.  I am a huge fan of the business side of sports, but this just seems like bad business.

Since this soap opera is ongoing with Davis, I will not be putting him into any of my trade discussions.  If Davis goes anywhere before Thursdays deadline it will be to the Lakers.  And from what I have heard out there, LA is willing to trade anyone and everyone other than James.  Boston has zero chance to enter the Davis sweepstakes until July.  Well, unless they move Irving, but that also doesn’t seem likely.  I do NOT want to trade away Irving.  I think he can be the centerpiece for a championship team.  I would build around Irving and I would do my best to keep him around. What about AD?  Who knows maybe Anthony Davis is traded to the Lakers before this article is posted.

The Davis saga does have implications on Boston’s front office.  As the deadline looms, Danny Ainge may not be able to be as aggressive on pursuing potential trades.  If Davis remains with New Orleans, then Ainge is going to want to have all his tradable assets on hand.  That will include Brown, Tatum, the Kings’, Clippers’ and Grizzlies’ first round picks.  If you are a Celtics fan and you want Davis on the team, than cross your fingers that the Pelicans can hold off the Lakers until Thursday afternoon.

Davis’ circus isn’t the only show in town.  Recently Kyrie Irving made comments that sounded nothing like the “re-signing” talk from earlier in the season.  Matter of fact it sounded like he may be leaning towards testing the market.  This also has huge ramifications for the Celtics' brass.  If the front office truly believes that Irving is having second thoughts about sticking around than you have to keep Terry Rozier around.  Rozier was thought to be the best trade chip for the C’s going into this year’s deadline.  Scary Terry is a good player, and if Irving is no longer an option, he is definitely a solid plan B.

If Boston can’t trade Brown, Tatum (for the record I personally wouldn’t make Tatum available) or the draft picks in case Davis is available in the summer and Rozier becomes untradeable because of the uncertainty of Irving…who can you trade to improve the roster?  In my opinion the best trade chips are Jabari Bird, Semi Ojeleye, Daniel Theis, Robert Williams, Guerschon Yabusele and Boston’s own round 1 draft pick.  The players are mainly for financial balance but some of them would add value to a package around whatever draft picks.  I know it’s unlikely that the Celtics can trade these players for a game changer.  Also the NBA has stupid trade restrictions so it hurts the GM’s ability to actually make deals.  But I still think there are trades to be made.

There haven’t been a lot of trade rumors out there.  Well, other than the Davis talk.  It seems the Celtics are also very quiet on the trade front.  So these possible trades are completely speculation.  Just pretend deals that I have come up with.  I am just putting on my GM pants and straight up throwing ideas at the wall.  Now I did use ESPN’s trade machine to see if these are financially plausible.  And I am using reports and other rumblings to form these deals.  As the imaginary GM of the very real Boston Celtics, I will not make any three-way deals.  I guess I’m just not that type of guy.

TRADE # 1: Guershon Yabusele and Boston’s round 1 for Thon Maker

courtesy of
Reports came out that Maker and his agent were asking for a trade.  Maker was the 10th pick in the 2016 draft.  He has a very interesting set of skills.  Maker is very agile considering he is over 7 feet tall.  You may remember his highlights from when he was in high school.  He also had a good playoff series against the Celtics.  He hasn’t worked out for Milwaukee, but why not take a chance on a unique player like Thon Maker?

TRADE #2: Semi Ojeleye, Daniel Theis and lower draft compensation (if needed) for Larry Nance Jr.

courtesy of
The Cavs stink.  Once LeBron packed up and headed west the team has fallen down to the league’s basement.  I would imagine every player on their team is available.  Nance is energetic, tall and can run the floor.  He isn’t a shooter but he can definitely finish around the rim.  Nance Jr. is also a good rebounder.  I think he would slide into the Theis role and be an upgrade to Theis.  He wouldn’t be a long term contract either so the commitment is minimal.  Oh yeah and he has final’s experience too.  I also think the Celtic’s would benefit from consolidating the roster.

TRADE #3: Jabari Bird for Vince Carter.

This trade is just for me.  I have been a huge Vinsanity fan since I was a kid.  I remember wearing his sneakers in 8th grade.  I must have watched the clip of him jumping over a 7 foot French center a thousand times.  I would love to give Carter a shot at being part of a deep playoff run.  It isn’t much but Carter is still averaging over 6 points a game in Atlanta.  He’s 42!  And you can never have enough tough veterans in the locker room.

TRADE #4: Robert Williams, Daniel Theis, Semi Ojeleye and future picks for Willie Cauley-Stein

courtesy of
Cauley-Stein has is basically the better version of Larry Nance Jr.  I would imagine his price would be higher but the Kings are still rebuilding so why not trade WCS for draft picks.  I like Cauley-Stein’s potential on the Celtics.  He is averaging 13 points and 9 rebounds a game for Sacramento.  I think he could provide Boston with a very athletic big man to play alongside Horford, Tatum or Baynes.  WCS is a restricted free agent after the year so the Celtics could part ways if decided.

TRADE #5: Daniel Theis, Guershon Yabusele, Robert Williams and Semi Ojeleye for Boban Marjanovic

courtesy of
Boban is a massive human being who can be a complete force in the paint.  The 7 foot 3 inch center has become a bit of a viral star, appearing on a bunch of different shows.  Including the movie “John Wick.”  That isn’t why I would trade for him.  But it sure doesn’t hurt.  Boban can be the big man that the Celtics have needed when they are getting killed on the glass.  Baynes has been solid but Marjanovic has potential to really fill that role.  How could he not? He is 7’3” 290 pounds.

TRADE #6 well…number 6 isn’t realistic at all.  There is zero chance of this happening, but it is just a trade I would try if I were the GM.  It is absolutely a deal I would explore in NBA 2K video game.

TRADE #6:  Jaylen Brown and whatever draft picks necessary (seriously any) for Luka Doncic

courtesy of
Doncic is well on his way to winning this year’s Rookie of the Year Award.  Luka is sweeping the NBA world by storm and I am a huge fan.  The 19 year basketball protégé from Real Madrid of Spain has the potential to be one of the NBA’s best players for the next ten years.  Again, there is no chance Doncic is traded.  NONE!  Especially since the Mavericks just acquired Kristaps Porzingis.  It is still fun to think about.

With the deadline close, the NBA hot stove should be at its hottest.  Most basketball fans, and the Celtic’s organization to be honest, will be glued to the Anthony Davis situation.  I understand Danny Ainge is preoccupied so I went ahead and did some ground work for him.  Danny holla atcha boy!
