Is Kyrie Really Sorry?

SHARE:

Kyrie Irving has apologized for the way he has treated the Boston media recently, according to an article on Yahoo Sports.  Irving has been very frustrated with the Boston media on his impending free agency and his team’s recent play.  “The way I’ve handled things, it hasn’t been perfect” Irving told Yahoo Sports.  “I’ve made a lot of mistakes that I take full responsibility for. I apologize.”

This comes in the wake of some tumultuous interactions between Irving and the media.  Before the West Coast road trip the Boston Celtics had a Sunday match up with the Houston Rockets in Boston.  Before the game the Celtics Irving was on camera heard saying, “I’m not gonna miss this s#*! when I’m done playing.”  Having the camera in your face is not something new for NBA players, especially superstars like Irving, who are accustomed to it on a daily basis.

If this was a one off comment by Irving we could all dismiss this as him being frustrated, but this wasn’t a random one-off comment by Irving.  Irving has been an immature child off the court with his comments with the media for months now.

After Sunday’s video of Irving before the game, he continued on Monday saying, "I didn't really come into this game to be cameras in my face, be famous, be a celebrity, whatever embodies that”.  Sure, ok Uncle Drew.

I’ll continue to quote his “miss this s#*!”.  He’s certainly used his celebrity in the league to his advantage.  In case you forgot last year when Irving starred in a box office film Uncle Drew.  The movie grossed $46 million in theaters.

Kyrie has voiced his displeasure with the Boston media for months now, and since the video surfaced with him and Durant talking the Kyrie versus the media has been at an all-time high.  In the video, Kyrie is talking to Durant about scrutiny and how it “doesn’t make the League fun”.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver was in Boston recently and he was echoing the same sentiments.  Silver was quoted saying “a lot of players are unhappy.”  I’m sure this doesn’t apply to all players, but clearly it’s impacting Irving.

“I’m still learning, bro. I come from a suburb of New Jersey.  I’m not used to all this [attention]” said Irving.  He comments further on how “the off-the-court-stuff, that’s more inspirational side of things where it’s not really so much about the game.”

For the Celtics, right now it needs to be about the game.  The team is coming off a 3-1 West Coast road trip where they played better and have seemed to mesh better as a team.  As the leader of the team on and off the court, Kyrie needs to keep his locker room united and focused on the NBA playoffs.  “Like I’ve said before… this breaks up locker rooms.  Media breaks up locker rooms” Irving went on to say.

While some of that maybe true, if Kyrie, Coach Brad Stevens and Danny Ainge have this team focused, the media won’t be an issue.  For the Celtics, if they continue to play as a team versus five individuals on the court, the media attention will focus on the game and team.  As for Kyrie, well he needs to focus on his actions on and off the court.
