Is the XFL next for Gronk?

SHARE:

Rob Gronkowski announced his retirement from the NFL on Sunday.  From his personal Instagram page, the nine year veteran says goodbye from the sport he’s always loved.  “Thank you for everyone accepting who I am and the dedication I have put into my work to be the best player I could be,” he said.  “But now it's time to move forward and move forward with a big smile knowing that the New England Patriots Organization, Pats Nation, and all my fans will be truly a big part of my heart for rest of my life.”

This announcement is coming on the heels of the New England Patriots winning the Super Bowl.

Tom Brady also expressed his sentiments for the future Hall of Fame tight end by saying "Love u man!!!", the long-time Patriots quarterback wrote on Gronkowski Instagram post.  "Couldn’t be a better person or teammate.”

So what’s next for Gronkowski?

Two years ago, Gronkowski jumped in the squared circle at WrestleMania 33.  He helped his good friend Mojo Rawley win the Andre the Giant Battle Royal.  Gronkowski has the personality to fit in the WWE.  His goofy demeanor and entertaining personality could connect with the WWE Universe.

I’m sure the hardcore fans of WWE are cringing at the thought of Gronk joining, but it’s not as far fetched.  Vince McMahon loves characters.  Could Gronkowski become the next mainstream star to work with the company?  Ronda Rousey made the jump from UFC to the squared circle.

Gronkowski has reportedly hooked on with Hollywood and was cast in a film alongside Mel Gibson called ‘Boss Level’.  Gronkowski already channeling his inner Rock.

Ultimately, I think Gronkowski will be the face of the XFL.  The new XFL will launch in 2020, and according to McMahon, they’re giving the sport back to the fans.

The first thing Gronkowski does is he becomes a legit face and star for the league.  The roles Gronkowski can have with the league could vary.  Could Gronkowski bring his fun loving personality to the booth and call a game?

I can see the smirk on McMahon’s face if he indeed does play in his new XFL.  It would be a feeling of jubilation of sorts.  I could completely see McMahon taking a page out of the book ‘A Gronking to Remember'.  Could Gronkowski be McMahon’s Hulk Hogan for the XFL?

If he truly stays to his word and doesn’t play anymore in the NFL, returning to football after a year off could be difficult for Gronkowski.

I don’t think he’ll play in the XFL, but if Gronkowski shows up at WrestleMania 35 in New York this year, the speculation should begin on whether or not Gronk and McMahon are brewing something really big.

One thing is clear, there will never be another Rob Gronkowski.  During the last 20 years, New England fans have had the pleasure of seeing six Super Bowl Champions, the greatest owner in professional sports, the greatest head coach in the history of football, the greatest quarterback to ever play the game, and arguably the best tight end in NFL history.

Whatever he does next, from Hollywood, WWE or the XFL, I want to say it was an amazing nine years.  I’ll never forget the impact Gronkowski had on and off the field.  You never know, Gronkowski could be back before you know it, but until then, thank you Gronk!
