Patriots Interested in Josh Rosen, Are You?

The Arizona Cardinals are interested in trading current quarterback Josh Rosen.  The Cardinals own the first overall pick in the NFL Draft and are looking at drafting Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray.  The Cardinals and new head coach Kliff Kingsbury believe that Murray is the real deal.  But the problem the Cardinals have is they have Rosen on the roster and it doesn’t make sense to have both Rosen and Murray on the same team.

In last year’s NFL Draft, the Cardinals drafted Rosen with the 10th overall pick with the thoughts of Rosen being the future leader of the organization.  The Cardinals gave up some significant capital to acquire Rosen.  The team sent the 15th, 79th and the 152nd pick to the Raiders for the chance to grab Rosen at #10 overall.

Now enters Kingsbury, the new head football coach for the Cardinals, and he is absolutely in love with Murray.  In fact, back in October of last year, Kingsbury gave some high praise for Murray saying, “Kyler is a freak…. I would take him with the first pick of the draft if I could.”

The Cardinals have the first overall pick and they do not want Rosen, so do the defending Super Bowl Champion New England Patriots make a play for the former UCLA quarterback?

The Boston Sports Syndicate has had conversation surrounding Rosen on our podcast, which you can catch on Twitch TV on the The Syndicate network.  Including our Brand Manager James, who is in love with Rosen more than Kingsbury is in love with Murray.  Bromances aside the Patriots have company for Rosen. - Customized NFL GearReportedly right now three NFL teams are interested in Rosen, the San Diego… I mean Los Angeles Chargers, the New York Giants and the New England Patriots.  According to Fox Sports One’s Joel Klatt, he says a team has already offered the Cardinals a second round pick.

“There are three teams that I have heard and I know are very interested in Josh Rosen, and that’s New England, that’s the New York Giants, and that’s the LA Chargers.  And one of those have already offered a second-round pick” said Klatt.

Here are the picks the New England Patriots own in the first three rounds of the draft:

First, 32nd overall
Second, 56th overall
Second, 64th overall
Third, 73rd overall
Third (comp), 97th overall
Third (comp), 101st overall

If I am Bill Belichick, I do not give that first round pick for Rosen.  I want the Patriots to use the first rounder and potentially trade up or use that pick for something to help them now.  The Cardinals would take a first for Rosen, but unfortunately they’ve shown their hand regarding Murray.  If the Patriots part with a second round pick they will have Tom Brady’s potential successor now for the club to develop.  Ideally, if the Patriots could send a third round pick to Arizona for Rosen that would make the most sense, but if Belichick thinks Rosen is the guy he needs, then send them the draft capital to get it done.

The Patriots will have competition for Rosen.  The New York Giants are going to be the real dark horse in the Rosen sweepstakes because, quite frankly, it’s time to move on from Eli Manning.  Rosen immediately becomes the heir to the throne, and if the second Manning starts to throw interceptions and he rears his Manning face, in will step Rosen.  The Giants need the successor more than the Patriots do for right now.

Brady is still performing at a high level, even at the age of 41. The current back up on the roster is Brian Hoyer who is 33 and does not figure into the plans of the future.  Rosen, 22, would be able to learn behind Brady.  Rosen is an extremely talented QB and already after one season could benefit from a change of scenery.  That whole situation in Arizona has been a mess since they drafted him last season.

Here’s my take Patriots fans, the Patriots need to address the future at quarterback and I hope they do in the draft.  The fact is Belichick will never overpay what he perceives as value of a player.  This Rosen to the Patriots feels more to me like a smokescreen into something different for the Patriots.  So for me, I’ll be excited if the Patriots acquire Rosen, but I’m not sold he’s the real deal to replace TB12.

If I had to choose the heir to the throne in New England…. I would sellout for Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence and watch the Patriots never lose a football game again.  I love the idea of Lawrence in New England, and honestly so should you.

How’s that for a hot take?
