Spring Training Standouts

SHARE:

Heading into the last draft weekend before opening day, I wanted to hit on a few under the radar guys that have stood out this spring.  Players that in my opinion have shown enough this past month to believe some of their production can be maintained throughout the season.

Matt Strahm:

2019 MLB Spring Training GearIn 2018 Strahm was one of the few bright spots on a terrible Padres pitching staff.  Coming out of the bullpen, the lefty had 69 strikeouts in 61 innings pitched.  Strahm was also able to keep runners off the bases with a 0.98 WHIP.  As a former starting pitcher in the Royals system, heading into spring training there was talk of a possible transition back to the rotation.  Strahm has shown through this spring he has been able to maintain his ability to keep runners off base with a 1.17 WHIP.  He’s also missing bats, striking out 15 batters in 12 innings.  If Strahm begins the season in the Padres rotation he will be someone worth monitoring in all leagues.

Ryan McMahon:

Coming off of a disappointing 2018 season, Ryan McMahon was poised for a backup utility role.  After a huge spring it looks as though McMahon may have earned himself a starting job at second base.  Not only is McMahon leading all of baseball in batting this spring (.457), he’s also showed off some of the power he was known for in the minors. Out of 21 hits, 11 of them have gone for extra bases.  If McMahon can keep this hot start rolling into the regular season, that may be enough to hold fellow prospect Garrett Hampson from regaining control of the starting gig.  A power hitting second baseman in Coors... Sign me up.

Pete Alonso:

The minor league home run leader in 2018, Pete Alonso is looking to showcase that power this year in the Big Apple.  It remains to be seen if that will be the case to start the season though.  The Mets top prospect is locked in a battle for the starting first base job with Dominic Smith.  The big first baseman has responded batting .360 with 8 hits for extra bases.  In my opinion, talent will win out.  Alonso, even with his poor defense, brings such an impactful bat to the Mets lineup I don’t see Smith holding him off for long, if at all.  The Mets have yet to announce if Alonso will start the year at first base or in the minors, but either way I’m keeping an eye on him.  If he is announced as the everyday starter before opening day I wouldn’t hesitate in adding him to my team.  If you need any extra convincing about the power, go watch the bomb he hit in last year’s futures game.

As most fantasy players know, we can’t put too much stock into spring numbers.  I do think they are useful though for finding guys later in drafts, and as possible early season waiver adds.
