Time to Lock Up Benintendi

The Boston Red Sox have someone other than Mookie Betts they need to deal with from a contract stand point.  One player they should look to lock up now is Andrew Benintendi.

Last week, Houston Astros superstar Alex Bregman agreed to a six-year, $100 million deal, buying out all three years of his arbitration-eligibility.  Benintendi, who becomes eligible for arbitration, has the same contract that Bregman had prior to his extension.

The Red Sox need to do the same with Benintendi and avoid a potential Betts mess in the future.  No deal is imminent between the Red Sox and Benintendi, but with the way the sport is shifting and teams are buying out arbitration years, it would make sense for the Red Sox to sign him now.

The Red Sox and Benintendi agreed to a one-year deal prior to Spring Training for this season.  He will become eligible for arbitration beginning next season.  Last season for the Sox, Benintendi hit .290 with 16 home runs and 87 RBI.

Is Andrew Benintendi worth the contract Bregman just signed with the Astros?  The answer is yes.

Shop the All-Star Game Collection at MLBshop.comBregman and Benintendi have very similar stat lines.  The career line through the first three years in the league:

Benintendi: .282 AVG 38 HR 191 RBI .359 OBP

Bregman: .282 AVG 58 HR 208 RBI .366 OBP

The numbers are close enough to make a case for the Red Sox to pay Benintendi.

The Red Sox have already addressed Chris Sale and agreed to an extension with the ace lefty.  It has been reported that the team offered Betts an extension in 2017 that was rejected.  The team has Xander Bogaerts and Rick Porcello both eligible to hit the open market this fall.

The fact is the Red Sox will not be able to sign everyone.  The club also wants to stay under the luxury tax.  But honestly, this is the price of doing business.  When you are the Boston Red Sox you will have all-star caliber players and superstars on the team.  You cannot let money get in the way of being competitive.

The Red Sox may be weary of spending foolish money.  The club is still paying Pablo Sandoval for that disaster of a contract. Thank you Ben Cherrington for the Panda.

Ultimately it’s up to Benintendi if he wants to get locked up long term.  He could take play from the Bregman playbook and sign and get the security of years and money now.  On the other hand, Benny can look at how Betts has handled his impending free agency and go year to year with arbitration.

In my opinion the Red Sox front office needs to use the Bregman contract as the baseline to sign Benintendi.  Signing Benny isn’t a priority, but it needs to be something for fans to think about, because once the arbitration process starts it could get harder to sign Benny long term.
