Boom or Bust: Andy Isabella Is The Prototypical Patriot

UMass receiver Andy Isabella has quickness and blazing speed.  This was evident at the NFL Combine when he turned more than heads with his 4.31 40-yard dash time.  The Ohio native has his sights set on the NFL, and the New England Patriots would be smart to select him.

Coming out of high school, Isabella was recruited by colleges Lafayette and Air Force.  Schools took notice of Isabella due to his electric track times.  In high school as a senior he became the Division I state champion in the 100-meter dash.  In 2015, at the NEOTIC Buckeye Meet, Isabella ran the 60-meter dash in 6.72 seconds.  That was the fastest time in the nation.  Basically what that means is Isabella is freaking fast!

Those times ultimately led him to getting an offer from Oklahoma State.  When that offer fell through he hooked on with UMass.

Leading up to the combine, Moss and Isabella worked out for three weeks.  Versatility will be key as Isabella transitions to the NFL.  Look for the speedy receiver to play slot, return punts and even kickoffs.

At the Combine, Isabella commented on working with Moss saying "The first day working with him, I sat on the field and spent 30 minutes dragging myself to the car.  And then the next day we were out doing the same thing.  Now we have a relationship where I cannot be afraid to talk to him.  He is teaching me a lot.”

If Isabella were to be drafted by the New England Patriots, he would come to an organization with a background of developing receivers similar to him.  Troy Brown, Wes Welker, Danny Amendola and Julian Edelman have all been part of coach Bill Belichick’s system.

The Patriots will see some competition from other teams for Isabella.  The Cleveland Browns and the Green Bay Packers have expressed interest in drafting Isabella.  If Isabella were to be drafted by the Browns it would become a feel good homecoming for him.  Browns fans could see Baker Mayfield throwing the ball to Jarvis Landry, Antonio Callaway and Andy Isabella from the slot.

I would expect Isabella to be selected in the 3rd round.  His speed alone is enough for teams to draft him with the hopes he could duplicate many of the receivers that have seen success in New England.  The Patriots currently hold multiple picks in the 3rd round.  Speculation around the league is the Pats may trade one of their 3rd rounders in an attempt to lure Arizona Cardinals quarterback Josh Rosen to Foxboro.

My take is this; Isabella would fit into New England perfectly and he would begin to address the need of getting younger on the offensive side of the ball.  The Patriots will surely be linked to free agent Danny Amendola, who is similar to Isabella.  His speed and elusiveness, which is comparable to Moss, is another reason to bring him to New England.  The Patriots need football players, players who have the versatility to play other roles on the team.  Isabella is the perfect Patriots wide receiver prototype.  If I am calling the shots from the draft war room, I select Isabella in the 3rd round.
