Can Jarrett Stidham Be the Successor At QB?

The New England Patriots selected Auburn quarterback Jarrett Stidham in Round 4 of the NFL Draft on Saturday.  Stidham is now the ninth quarterback head coach Bill Belichick has taken in the draft since Tom Brady was selected with the 199th pick in the 2000 NFL Draft.

Stidham originally began his college football career at Baylor, but he transferred to Auburn in the wake of the school's sexual abuse scandal and firing head coach Art Briles.  During his time at Auburn, Stidham, the 6-foot-2, 218 pound quarterback put up some decent numbers.  He completed 63.6% of his passes for 5,952 yards with 36 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.

Stidham has a strong arm, decent mobility and may project better at the pro level than he did at Baylor and Auburn.  In fact, Stidham compares himself to former Patriots backup Jimmy Garoppolo.  Stidham said at the Senior Bowl, “I feel like we’re similar in size.”

2019 NFL Rookie JerseysStidham is an intelligent play caller, he shows he can be accurate on the move and looks to have above-average touch with the football.  Stidham is extremely competitive and will provide significant upside for the Patriots.  He will need to develop his deep ball and timing.  Some analysts feel that Stidham is too antsy under pressure that will result in mistakes at the pro level.

Stidham is now in New England and he will get to learn under the greatest quarterback of all time in Brady.  Stidham said he “couldn’t think of a better situation” than being developed and coached by Belichick and offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels.

Stidham, 22, will need to develop more if he wants to become an every Sunday quarterback in the NFL.  If Stidham wants to be successful,  he will strictly need to focus on his development and not let any of the outside noise be a distraction, like Brady and how much longer he plans to play.

Patriots director of player personnel Nick Caserio was very impressed with Stidham after meeting him at Auburn’s pro day.  “He’s a smart kid, pretty mature, picks things up well.  So we’ll see how it goes.  He’s going to transition into a system that’s a little bit different in the terms of play-calling and some other things he’ll be asked to do here.  But he’s an impressive kid” said Caserio.

Current ESPN analyst Louis Riddick also had some glowing things to say about Stidham, “Jarrett Stidham, pure, easy throwing motion with great velocity and touch/accurate today.  Was a surgeon in red zone work.  I like him.  A LOT.”

Stidham’s only focus right now is how he can become a professional at the NFL level and focus on developing his abilities so he can position himself to be an every down player.  “I don’t think I feel any pressure,” said Stidham.  “Everyone wants to be as good as Tom Brady someday, but I’ve got to take it one day at a time.  I’m going to work as absolutely as hard as I can to make sure I can do whatever it is to help this organization out.”

Stidham will have the time to develop in the Patriots system while Brady and the team focuses on winning more Super Bowls.  Josh McDaniels will have the opportunity to tailor an offense that will better suit Stidham, that works well for his traits at the professional level.  The Patriots drafted a quarterback with the tools to become a starter at the pro level.  The Patriots are intact at the starter position with Brady at the helm.  Stidham is in the ideal situation where he is in a professional organization with the best coach in the history of the league and the greatest quarterback of all time to learn from.
