Does Jimmy Graham Make Sense for New England?

The New England Patriots need to make a trade to help bolster the offense, especially the tight end position.  Bill Belichick is unpredictable when it comes to us trying to figure out what the team will do next from a free agent perspective.  With the NFL Draft only a few weeks away the Patriots have assets to trade, but the question remains - who will Belichick acquire?

The one thing we know in New England is the Patriots love value.  The Patriots either before or at the draft could trade for Green Bay Packers tight end Jimmy Graham.  Two things with this take, one is the Patriots have shown interest in Graham in the past.  They were linked to him prior to Graham signing with Green Bay.  Secondly, like the Patriots, the Packers have a need at the tight end position and could draft a tight end in the first round.  This would leave Graham expendable from a cap casualty perspective.

The Patriots have the draft picks to offer to Green Bay to acquire Graham.  They currently have a collection of players on their roster that not even the most diehard Pats fan knows who they are.  The team has Stephen Anderson, Ryan Izzo, Jacob Hollister and Matt LaCosse.

If the Patriots wanted to trade for Graham, a third rounder would probably get it done.  The Packers recently picked up Graham's $5 million roster bonus to secure him to this upcoming season.  The Packers are protecting themselves in case they aren't able to get a tight end in the draft ,but that seems extremely unlikely.

Here’s something else to think about.  If he went to New England, Graham in his career would have caught footballs from Drew Brees, Russell Wilson, Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady.

I’ll admit, Graham is on the downside of his career.  In the first round the Packers will pick 12th and 30th, which means they have every opportunity to select Noah Fant, T.J. Hockenson or Irv Smith before the Patriots have a chance to make a selection.

The only scenario I could see the Patriots trading for Graham is if the Packers grab Fant or Hockenson at 12, and then deal Graham to New England for draft picks.  The free agent market is dried up and there isn’t an impact player in that market whose better than what the Patriots already have on the roster.

If New England opts to acquire Graham, its merely to bridge the gap until they find the next tight end to impact the roster for years to come. Brady and Josh McDaniels would make Graham better, and he certainly is a major upgrade then what they have.  The one thing we can expect is, despite a frustrating offseason and the retirement of Gronk, the Patriots are going to make a trade and re-tool the wide receiver and tight end positions to give TB12 weapons in their quest to repeat as Super Bowl Champions.
