Does Ole Miss WR AJ Brown Make Sense For the Patriots?

The NFL Draft will be here Thursday from Nashville, and the New England Patriots will look to add some youth to their roster.  The Patriots need to continue to give Tom Brady weapons.  With the loss of Rob Gronkowski, who retired, the Patriots have a clear need for another playmaker on offense not named Julian Edelman or Sony Michel.

One name to watch is Ole Miss wide receiver AJ Brown.  Brown, who is 6 feet tall and 226 pounds, could immediately fill the void left by Chris Hogan, who left via free agency a few weeks ago.

Brown has the ability to play outside the numbers.  He’s a good route runner and has good hands to catch the football.  Brown is a fantastic athlete and has lateral agility and premier quickness.  In fact, some draft experts have compared Brown a lot to Steelers wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster.

Brown, who met with the Patriots on his Pro Day, would be a welcome addition to the Patriots offense.  However, Bill Belichick has never drafted a wide receiver in the first round and has a low success rate on wide receivers in the draft.

The only names who have been successful in the Patriots system have been Edelman, Deion Branch and David Givens.  Given the fact that Belichick has been running the show since 2000, that doesn’t give me the warm and fuzzies inside about his ability to select a talent wide receiver through the draft.

The downside to Brown is he’s a wide receiver and they are extremely difficult to project in the NFL.  If he’s selected by New England he will need to learn an extremely complex playbook and get on the same page with Brady.  Brady is expected to miss voluntary workouts.  He did the same thing last year.

While he’s quick, he doesn’t have elite speed for a wide receiver.  But Belichick and McDaniels could certainly mask that flaw to allow him to be productive on the football field.

The Patriots current depth chart at wide receiver currently has Edelman, Phillip Dorsett, Bruce Ellington, Maurice Harris, Braxton Berrios, Damoun Patterson, and free agent signing Demaryius Thomas.  Josh Gordon is currently suspended by the NFL.  If Brown is selected he could be good insurance for Brown.

While there is no perfect NFL prospect in the draft, Brown is a talent this Patriots offense needs.  His ability to almost play right away is extremely attractive for an offense that is going to need a new playmaker for Brady.
