Eovaldi To the IL: Surgery Expected Tuesday

The 2019 Boston Red Sox season has not gone to plan to say the least.  The Red Sox are 7-13, and coming off a big April win against the first place Tampa Bay Rays.  With some optimism going into Game Two of this series with the Rays, the Red Sox today placed right-hander Nathan Eovaldi on the 10-day IL with a “loose body” in his elbow.

Eovaldi went six innings, giving up only three hits, six strikeouts, no earned runs, and allowed one run against the New York Yankees on Wednesday.  His start was spoiled when Ryan Brasier gave up a grand slam against Brett Gardner. The Yankees went on to win that game 5-3 and sweep the two game series versus the Red Sox.

MLB T-shirts at Fanatics.comEovaldi is no stranger to elbow issues.  He has had multiple Tommy John surgeries, including one that sidelined him all of 2017.

On March 28th last season, Eovaldi needed arthroscopic surgery to clean up loose bodies in his elbow.  He missed two months of the season prior to being traded from the Rays to the Red Sox.  He signed an extension with the club this offseason, four-years for $68 million dollars.

Eovaldi finished 2018 with a 3.81 ERA in 111 innings.

Eovaldi is going to have surgery Tuesday to clean up his elbow. Hector Velazquez figures to be in the mix for Eovaldi’s spot in the rotation.  It’s uncertain whether the Red Sox will look at external options.  It’s highly unlikely they turn to Dallas Keuchel, who remains a free agent.  Gio Gonzalez is expected to opt out of his contract with the Yankees and could be an option.

The team can also look at Darwinzon Hernandez to make a few starts, he is currently in the minors but could be called up if Velazquez struggles filling the void.

The team recalled lefty Bobby Poyner from Pawtucket.

Eovaldi, 29, is 0-0 with a 6.00 ERA in four starts this season with the Red Sox.  The team is 3-1 when he has pitched this season.

The Red Sox will look to weather the storm with fill-ins while Eovaldi gets his elbow cleaned up. The Red Sox certainly cant afford another loss to the rotation with Eovaldi down.
