Patriots Sign Demaryius Thomas, But He Comes With Question Marks

The New England Patriots have signed wide receiver Demaryius Thomas to a one year contract.  This comes after the Houston Texans elected to release Thomas following a torn Achilles.  The Texans acquired Thomas, 31, this past season in a trade with the Denver Broncos.  Thomas only played seven games for the Texans before going down with the Achilles injury.

According to Ian Rapport the deal is for one year and $6 million.  Thomas now becomes the Patriots newest reclamation project with some major upside if healthy.

The signing of Thomas reunites him with Josh McDaniels, who drafted Thomas back in 2010 when he was the head coach of the Denver Broncos.  The 6-foot-3, 229-pound receiver out of Georgia Tech totaled 23 receptions for 275-yards for the Texans last season.

When healthy Thomas has been a top wide receiver in the NFL.  He had a five 1,000-yard receiving season that spanned into 2016.  During nine seasons with the Denver Broncos, Thomas played in 125 games, 665 receptions and 9,055-yards.

The last few seasons we need to consider who the Broncos' quarterbacks have been throwing to Thomas.  He has had the likes of Paxton Lynch, Trevor Siemian, and Case Keenum as his quarterback.  Thomas will obviously benefit from the GOAT.

While Patriots fans are excited the team has signed a player, who exactly are the Patriots getting?

Two years ago there was a video that surfaced online where Thomas had some words for Patriots quarterback Tom Brady.  Thomas said in the video “F@$% Tom Brady, but he’s great.”  The video surfaced when TMZ posted it two years ago where Thomas was out partying during the offseason.

In addition, the Patriots new wide out was in some legal trouble this past February.  Thomas was involved in a motor vehicle accident back on February 16th, and he was arrested and accused of vehicular assault.  The document released to police detailed Thomas driving 70 mph, which was more than twice the speed limit.  His SUV flipped over and back onto its wheels.  One of his passengers in the vehicle was injured in the accident.

The Patriots now have Julian Edelman, Bruce Ellington, Braxton Berrios, Phillip Dorsett, Maurice Harris, Matthew Slater and Damoun Patterson on the depth chart.  The team should still look to add a player through the NFL Draft coming up next week.

The move is a low risk-high reward signing for the Patriots.  What’s a good sign is the connection to McDaniels.  A few years ago, the Patriots signed receiver Brandon Lloyd, who McDaniels coached when the Rams were in St. Louis.  He came to the Patriots and had 74 receptions for 911 yards and 4 touchdowns.  If Thomas is able to give the Patriots that kind of production I think everyone in New England would be happy.

If Josh Gordon can come back from his suspension and is completely mentally and physically healthy, pairing Thomas with him and Edelman would give the Patriots a formidable trio at wide receiver.  With the loss of Rob Gronkowski due to his retirement, there are going to be many questions surrounding the Patriots offense.  Whatever Belichick’s plan is, Thomas has a chance to play a big part in the Patriots offense.
