Patriots to Play the Pittsburgh Steelers Week One

The NFL schedules are being released tonight, and the Pittsburgh Steelers will be the Week One opponent for the Super Bowl Champions.  The news was first reported by Evan Lazar of CLNS and later Jeff Howe and Nick Underhill of The Athletic.

The NFL got this wrong.  If they wanted a money match up for the first week of the season, they should have had the Browns in Foxboro for Week One.

Shop for official New England Patriots fan gear and authentic collectibles at NFLShop.comI wanted the Cleveland Browns in Foxboro, Week One Primetime on Sunday night.  Baker Mayfield vs. Tom Brady.  OBJ vs. Stephen Gilmore?  I could have ended this article right here.

Who wouldn’t want this?  Apparently the NFL and Roger Goodell doesn’t want this.

The Cleveland Browns have assembled a roster that should get them into the playoffs.  This off-season they’ve added Odell Beckham Jr., Kareem Hunt, Olivier Vernon, and Sheldon Richardson.  The Browns on paper are stacked, and there is a lot of optimism surrounding this team for the first time in a long time.

Instead, Big Ben will come to Foxboro without Antonio Brown and Le'Veon Bell.  This will be the first time Pittsburgh will come to Foxboro since the 2015 kickoff.  The Patriots lost to the Steelers 17-10 last season.

The New England Patriots will get to unveil banner number six in front of the Steelers.

Mayfield in Primetime against the greatest head coach and quarterback in NFL history gives me goosebumps.  With the exception of NFL MVP Pat Mahomes, Mayfield is the hottest quarterback in the league right now.  The kid is absolute money.  The constant underdog who was drafted number one overall, who never settles for anything less than the best from himself and the people around him.

The NFL called an audible and gave us the Steelers.

This would be the Patriots first game without tight end Rob Gronkowski, who retired this offseason.  The Patriots new weapons on offensive wide receiver Demaryius Thomas and tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins will be tested out the gate against the Steelers defense.

The Browns had checked all the boxes for a premium Primetime match-up against the Super Bowl Champions.  The hype around this game for Week One in both Cleveland and New England would have been insane.  The New England fans would be ready for Mayfield and OBJ.  But Goodell’s schedule makers wanted Pittsburgh here.

The Browns haven’t played in a Sunday night football game since 2008, which is the only time they’ve been featured on NBC.  Their last Monday Night showdown was against the Ravens in 2015.  In that game the Ravens defense blocked a game winning field goal try and ran it back for a game winning touchdown.

The NFL played it safe with the Patriots Week One opponent.  Instead the Patriots will see the Browns in Week Eight (Oct 27th) at 4:25pm.  The Browns-Patriots Week Eight match-up could have some storylines coming into the game, especially if one or both are undefeated.

As an NFL fan I’m disappointed it’s Pittsburgh here in Week One and not the Browns.  The fact the Patriots aren’t playing the Browns to start the year in a dream match-up to kickoff the NFL 2019 season is a travesty.  Way to go Roger, you strike again.
