The Legend of Michael Chavis

The Boston Red Sox have taken two in row from the first place Tampa Bay Rays and will look to David Price this afternoon.  In what will be a Boston sports filled Easter Sunday, the Red Sox are coming off a big 6-5 win over the Rays last night where we saw Andrew Benintendi hit his first career grand slam, and he also had the game winning RBI sacrifice fly in the top of the 9th.  He also had a game high five RBI.

We also got to see top Red Sox prospect Michael Chavis pinch hit in the ninth inning and he ripped a double to deep centerfield over the head of two time Gold Glover Kevin Kiermaier.  Chavis came into the game to pinch hit for Sandy Leon with the game tied 5-5.  He ripped a 99-mph slider from Rays reliever Jose Alvarado and double to deep center.  Jackie Bradley Jr., who was on first, moved to third, and then Benny Biceps did the rest, scoring JBJ.

Chavis' big league dream came true on Saturday.  He said he’ll be giving the game ball he got his first major league hit with to his mom as a thank you for all the sacrifices she made for Chavis growing up so he could have his dreams come true.

Those dreams did come true for Chavis, who on Friday learned that he had gotten the big league call up from PawSox manager Billy McMillon.  The first person Chavis called was his mom Dorothy to give her the big news.  "I can't tell you how many times at my house, in the backyard we had a garden, how many times I envisioned this exact scenario, pinch hitting for the Boston Red Sox in the ninth inning off a closer who's nasty and getting a hit," Chavis said.  "I tossed up rocks, pretending I was in this moment.  When I was on deck, I looked around, and I was like, wow."

Chavis tweeted on Friday, “Let me tell you how many times I prayed for this at 11:11…”, those prayers were answered and he came up big for the Red Sox.

This win for Chavis and the Red Sox was a crucial one.  The Red Sox came into this series in last place in the AL East with some in the Boston sports media saying if the Red Sox lose two of three or get swept by the Rays it would effectively end their season in April.

While it was a great win for the Red Sox, the bullpen squandered a 5-0 lead.  Heath Hembree and Bobby Poyner were not sharp, and the Red Sox offense needed to bail out the pitching staff for a second straight night.

This season was starting to feel bleak with no feel good stories to get the fans invested in the season.  Last night, a 23-year old rookie named Michael Chavis ripped a double in the ninth for his first big league hit and Red Sox Nation just feels different.  The legend of Michael Chavis has begun with one swing of the bat last night.  It injected the locker room and dugout with a feeling of joy and a breath of fresh air.  The legend continues this afternoon when Chavis gets his first career start for the Boston Red Sox at 2:10 from Tropicana Field.
