David Price to the Injured List

Earlier today, the Red Sox announced that left-handed starting pitcher David Price was placed on the 10-day Injured List with elbow tendinitis.  Just when you thought they Red Sox had finally shaken off the World Series hangover and were returning to form, they are once again beset by a setback.  And so it goes with what appears to be a snake-bitten year for the defending World Series Champions.

The move is retroactive to this past Friday, which means the earliest Price could return is May 14th at Fenway against the Colorado Rockies.  The Red Sox have called up Ryan Weber from AAA Pawtucket to take Price's place on the 25 man Major League roster.

Price has been one of the few bright spots among the Red Sox starting rotation this season.  Price has made six starts this season and has a 1-2 record with a 3.75 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 42 strikeouts in 36 innings pitched.  In his last start against the White Sox on Thursday, Price threw six complete innings and allowed seven hits and three earned runs while striking out five and walking two.  He earned no decision in an eventual 6-4 walk-off loss to the ChiSox.

Price was originally scheduled to pitch Game 2 in the Orioles series on Tuesday night, and a replacement has not yet been named by Manager Alex Cora.  Weber has started eight games in his major league career which began in 2015.  He has had stints with Atlanta, Seattle, and last year pitched briefly with Tampa Bay.  He has a career 1-5 record with a 5.01 ERA.  In Pawtucket this season Weber has started five games and is 1-1 with a 5.04 ERA, with 18 strikeouts in 25 innings of work.

The Red Sox may also elect to utilize Hector Velazquez as an opener, depending on how well Smith fares Monday night and how much the bullpen is utilized.  Velazquez last pitched Saturday night in the Chicago, going one inning in the Red Sox blowout win.  Fortunately the team has an off day on Thursday to regroup before the Mariners come into Fenway for a three game series over the weekend.

The Red Sox could potentially go with a four man rotation through the next two weeks due to the three off days in that span.  Following the weekend series against Seattle, they will have the Monday off prior to taking on the Rockies in a two game set May 14th and 15th, then another off day on Thursday before the Astros come in for a three game series the weekend of May 17th – 20th.

The injury to Price interestingly comes following a recent report by WEEI’s Rob Bradford claiming the Red Sox have banned the video game Fortnite from the clubhouse.  Early last season Price was placed on the disabled list with carpal tunnel syndrome, allegedly attributed to his frequent playing of the popular video game.  Price was also utilized sparingly during the 2017 season amid fears he would need Tommy John surgery, though he last year claimed his elbow was examined and found to be “pristine”.

Time will only tell if Price’s IL stint is just precautionary maintenance, or an indication of much larger problems for the future.  The Red Sox can only hope the recent offensive outbursts continue to allow them to outscore opponents until both Price and Eovaldi can return to stabilize the rotation.
