Devers Hot Bat Leads the Sox to a Sweep of Seattle

The Boston Red Sox finally look like they’re figuring this season out.  They swept the Seattle Mariners at Fenway Park, who took three of four from the Sox to start the season.

Rafael Devers feels like the hottest hitter on the planet right now.  The 22-year-old Devers, had his third-straight three hit game in the Red Sox 9-5 win over Seattle Saturday afternoon.

Devers, who was 3-5 with four RBI on Saturday, followed that up on Mother’s Day by going 3-5 with an RBI and a double.  He has been highly criticized by Boston media for his lackluster play at third base this season, however, in the month of May he is shutting up all his critics.

In 10 games in May, Devers is 17-for-43 with two homers and 11 RBI.  In addition to that, Devers is currently tied for 10th with Houston Astros Alex Bregman in on-base percentage in the American League.

“He’s actually handling lefties OK," Red Sox Manager Alex Cora said.  “I know people are getting caught up on the home runs.  But if he keeps on hitting the strike zone the way he is, then that part of the game is going to happen.”

On Sunday in the series finale, Devers collected another three hits.  During the series against the Mariners, Devers became the first Red Sox player since Dustin Pedoria to record three straight three-hit games.  Former Sox shortstop Edgar Renteria holds the record of four straight three-hit games.
In addition, Devers, the hottest hitter in baseball, now has 16 multi-hit games this season.  The only players in baseball with more such games are Nolan Arenado, Javier Báez, Cody Bellinger, Jeff McNeil, David Peralta and Michael Brantley.  Brantley has 19 multi-hit games this season to lead the group mentioned.

“He’s been consistent,” Red Sox manager Alex Cora said. “He’s been staying in the strike zone.”

Devers, who has been a defensive liability this season at third, has completely silenced his critics with the nasty offensive streak he currently is on.  In 37 games this season, Devers has nine errors and a .925 fielding percentage.

Devers isn’t the only one sharing the offensive spotlight.  Michael Chavis has been nails at the plate as well.  In 19 games he has 20 RBI with six home runs. The Ice Horse has taken over Red Sox Nation with his bat and massive power.

Devers and the Sox will look to continue this torrid pace against the Colorado Rockies and Houston Astros.  The overall schedule becomes tougher the next few weeks, the Red Sox will need to rely on Devers and others to get them into first place.

Right now Devers is a wildcard and liability at third, but he is the hottest hitter on the planet and the Red Sox are benefiting from his hot bat at the plate.
