Julian Edelman Gets What He Deserves

The recent news of Julian Edelman’s contract extension was well received among Patriots nation.  Many, including myself, felt it was about time.  Here’s a guy that has had a team first attitude his entire time in New England.  He truly cares about nothing but getting better, and winning championships.

I think many already felt that Edelman was underpaid, but when we learned about the money the Patriots were reportedly offering guys like Adam Humphries and Cole Beasley in free agency, that feeling was only exacerbated.  So, it’s nice to see the team reward a guy like Edelman.

You'd be hard pressed to find a guy on this roster who deserves this more than Edelman.  He eats, sleeps and breathes football.  In an interview with NBC Sports' Peter King earlier this year, Edelman - when referring to football, was quoted as saying, "This is what I am.  This is what I was put here to do.  This is what I sacrificed all my time for - my friends, my family, everything like that."  He's proven it with his play on the field, and his work and preparation off of it.

He's been nothing but the ultimate teammate, too. Here's a guy who single handedly kept the Patriots offense afloat in the Super Bowl, and rightfully walked away with the MVP.  He could have made a scene, clamoring for more money, but money is not a motivation for him.  It's refreshing to see a humble, hard-working guy like Edelman get his due.

With all that being said, his on-field performance alone is enough justification for this extension, though; even before he won Super Bowl MVP in February. I won't sit here and regurgitate his stats for you.  Anybody who watches the Patriots understands Edelman's importance to this team. Brady relies heavily on him each week, and with Rob Gronkowski retiring, that reliance is only going to intensify.

Another thing this extension does is prevent his contract from becoming a story.  If Edelman entered this year without any long-term security, it would have been talked about ad nauseam  Thankfully, we'll be spared from all of the hot takes.

Two years at $18 million may not seem like a lot; to me and you it is, but when you compare it to some of the other wide receiver contracts, it's still a bargain given Edelman's production.  An average annual value of $9 million still puts Edelman outside of the top 25 in that category among wide receivers.  However, when you examine the details of the contract, it looks a lot better.

Of the $18 million Edelman is set to earn, $12 million is guaranteed. He also got an additional $8 million just for signing the damn thing.

Some might be wary of giving an extension to a guy who was previously suspended for PED use.  There’s a worry that he’s a risk to get caught again, and face a longer suspension.  That doesn’t worry me with Edelman.

Yes, he got busted last year, but I truly believe that it was 100% related to his recovery from a torn ACL.  His positive test was for an "unrecognizable substance".  Edelman was apologetic and confused by the results, and vowed it would never happen again.  He probably took something out of the ordinary, in an effort to quicken his recovery, and that was that.  Edelman said himself that he had passed countless tests before this one.  It's likely an isolated incident that won't resurface.

Now, what does this extension mean for Tom Brady?  Does this ensure that Brady will be here for another couple of seasons after this one?  Brady's current contract expires at the end of this season.  So, is an extension imminent for him.  The bromance between he and Edelman is well documented.  I'd find it hard to believe that Edelman would agree to an extension without some sort of understanding, or belief, that Brady will be right by his side.

At any rate, this extension ensures Edelman remains a Patriot through the end of the 2021 season, but many are speculating that this ensures he'll be in Foxboro for the remainder of his career.  At that point, he'll be nearly 36 years old.  Guys Edelman's age, and at this stage of their careers, don't typically get extensions from the Patriots, so it's a nice change of pace.
