Two-Start Pitchers (5/7-5/12)

SHARE:

Fantasy baseball’s Week 6 is loaded with two-start pitchers.  Two start weeks can be crucial for the success of your match-up, especially if you happen to play in a points league.  Which I do.

Admittedly there is a bunch of must start pitchers that you would start whether they have one start or two.  These familiar names consist of Trevor Bauer, Max Scherzer, Gerrit Cole, Jacob deGrom, Jose Berrios, Stephen Strasburg, Blake Snell, Walker Buehler, Masahiro Tanaka and Hyun-Jin Ryu.  See, I told you there were a lot of must starts going twice in Week 6.  If you are lucky enough to have these guys on your team then you don’t need me to tell you to start them.  Here are some names you should try to add before lock today and get both starts.

Caleb Smith (@LAD, @ARI) / Max Fried (@CHC, @NYM)

MLBshop.com The Official Online Shop of Major League BaseballYou probably didn’t draft these guys, but they have been so good this season that there is basically zero chance that they are available.  But if they are in your league add now for the two starts and you may have a legit must start player going forward.

Collin McHugh (KC, TEX)

McHugh has been legit so far this year, but lately he has had some problems.  If he was dropped in your league than I think he is a must add heading into his two-start week.  The Astros starter has recorded nine strikeouts in back-to-back home starts.  The aforementioned turmoil was all on the road.  With two juicy home starts this week, make sure McHugh is in your starting lineup.

Griffin Canning (@DET, @BAL)

Young Griff is the Angels top pitching prospect and should be available in most leagues.  Canning made his big league debut last week against the Blue Jays.  He had an okay showing, but did show flashes of strikeout stuff.  Griffin has a good fastball and a plus curveball, and he used those pitches to carve out a 0.56 ERA this year in AAA.  It is always risky to start a rookie on the road, but given his weak matchups, I’d roll the dice.  And for what it’s worth, I have Canning in two leagues and will start him in both.

Lucas Giolito (@CLE, @TOR)

The Chicago White Sox starter has been a disappointment so far in his career.  As a former Round 1 pick, he has always carried hype wherever he has pitched.  This season has been...fine so far in 2019.  Giolito has really good stuff, and when things break right he can have a dominant night.  He is currently supporting a strikeout rate of nearly 30%, which is a career high.  In my opinion, Giolito isn’t a long term answer, but if you are looking to stream in Week 6 he could be your guy.

Daniel Norris (LAA, @MIN)

The Tigers young starting lefty has a lot of similarities to Lucas Giolito, and just like Giolito, I think he’s deserving of a look given his two-start Week 6.  His 3.47 ERA is pretty good, and I think he could be an asset this week.  I will admit, I’m nervous about his second start in Minnesota.  But if he prevails then you could have a pitcher worth holding on to on your hands.

My two-start fade is Mariners ace Marco Gonzales.  For the rest of the year I like Gonzales so I wouldn’t be dropping him in any format.  But this week he goes to New York to face the Yankees and then concludes the week in Boston.  Maybe the toughest two matchups a pitcher can have in one week.  If you can sit Gonzales this week and maybe use a lesser roster spot to stream some of the names above.
