London Calling

This weekend the Boston Red Sox will take on the rival New York Yankees in London.  You did just read that correctly, the Sox are playing a two-game series in London, England, against the Yanks.  What an awesome vacation that would have been.  Spend a week hanging out in England and then checking out the two historic games would be amazing.  It would be even better if I was able to fly across the pond in the Red Sox plane.  Did you see how incredible that thing looked?  I guess I can’t complain, I’m vacationing in Portugal later this month.

Here are some things that are worth noting about this weekend’s London Series

Shop for New York Yankees fan gear from Nike, Majestic and New Era at Shop.MLB.comBoth games will be played in an arena called London Stadium.  The stadium is in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park which is the Stratford District in London.  London Stadium was built for the 2012 summer Olympics.  I’m sure you were able to figure that out by reading the first couple paragraphs.  Honestly, it is a pretty cool looking stadium.  When I look at pictures of the field that the two teams will play on, I feel like it gives off a very English vibe.  That is probably because it looks like one of their soccer stadiums.  Which makes sense because they do play soccer in that stadium quite a bit.

There will be a ton of foul ground, even more than at the Oakland Coliseum.  That was the first thing I noticed when I looked at the field’s pictures.  The extra space beyond the foul lines will certainly help the pitchers, but you know what will NOT help the pitchers?  The fields dimension.  Each foul pole is only 330 feet away and the center field fence is only 385 feet away.  For the BSS fans in England, that’s 103 meters to left and right and 117 meters to center.  Not a big ballpark what so ever.  There is a mini monster in center, but I expect there to be a ton of homers this weekend.  I love the idea of putting two really powerful offenses in a cracker jack box.  The Fourth of July is next week, but I think some fireworks are coming this weekend in London.

As a sports fan you are already familiar with the teams that will be playing this weekend in England, so I won’t go into too much detail.  Game 1 will feature Rick Porcello taking on Masahiro Tanaka.  Eduardo Rodriguez will pitch game 2 for Boston while New York will utilize a bullpen game.

Saturday’s game will be at 1 pm EST and Sunday’s game will be at 10 am EST.  I love morning sports.  When the NFL goes to London, I always check out the 9 am games.  Boston is the home team in both games.  I don’t know why they didn’t split the series so both teams could have a chance to wear both of their uniforms in front of the English crowd.

During the game I read that there will be announcements educating fans on what just happened.  I guess when fans aren’t familiar with a sport you need an aid.  I like it.  Baseball can be an awesome game when you understand what is going on.  This will be the first Major League Baseball series played in Europe, but it won’t be the last.  Next summer the St. Louis Cardinals will take on the Chicago Cubs.
