Two Start Pitchers (6/24-6/30)

We are now well into the fantasy baseball season.  Your team may be on top of your league’s standings, you may be at the bottom, or probably for most your team is sitting in the middle of the pack.  Getting wins at this point of the year is crucial for making the playoffs.  Whether your goal is to push your way into the playoff picture or continue to dominate your league, these are some two start pitchers you may be able to add in your league to help you get a win.

Let me just breeze through some two start pitchers that are already owned in basically every league.  If you have any of these guys you’re starting them without hesitation.  Max Scherzer, Gerrit Cole, Lucas Giolito, Zack Greinke, Clayton Kershaw, even Robbie Ray have been must starts and you should continue to set it and forget it when it comes to them.

Kyle Gibson (TB, @CWS)

The Twins starting pitcher has put together a solid 2019 campaign.  This year Gibson has improved his walk rate and strikeout rate this season, and that has translated to fantasy production.  Starting the right hander can feel like a roll coaster ride.  That is probably why he is only owned in about half of fantasy leagues.  Gibson’s first matchup is a home game against the Tampa Bay Rays.  The Rays have been good this year but they won’t scare me away from starting Gibson.  He pitched against Tampa Bay on the road earlier this month and pitched five shutout innings.  Gibson’s second start will be on the road but against the Chicago White Sox.  The White Sox have been a much easier matchup then the Rays.  The Twins have been a beast of a team this year so there is a chance for Gibson to pick up two victories on top of some quality innings and strikeouts.  I like Kyle Gibson this week and I think he will produce for you fantasy team.

Embrace the past in Retro-Style with Cooperstown Collection jerseys and apparel from MLBShop.comSteven Matz (@PHI, ATL)

Speaking of roller coaster rides, Steven Matz’s entire career has felt like a thrill ride.  I can’t lie, Matz’s expected stats are pretty much right where they have been in his entire career.  I don’t expect Matz to be a long term answer for your fantasy team, but he can be useful given his two start week.  He will face tough competition, but I think Matz can still pitch well.  In five of his six previous starts Steven Matz has gone six innings and struck out five or more batters.  Matz is available in about 2/3 of leagues, so if you’re feeling desperate for pitching Matz could be your guy.

Trevor Richards (WAS, PHI)

Out of all the widely available two start pitchers Trevor Richards is my favorite.  Since early May Richards has been very good.  In seven of his last nine starts Richards has surrendered three or fewer runs.  Unlike Matz, I do believe that Richards is in a midst of a breakout season.  All of his expected stats back up his good 2019 season.  Both of his starts this week will come at home.  Miami’s home ballpark is very pitcher friendly, so he can expect a bit of a boost from that alone.  Other than a bad start against the Pirates that came a couple weeks ago, Richards has been great.  He surrendered no more than one run in five of his last six times taking the rubber.  In those same starts he has gone five innings or more and struck out five or more in each start.  Richards is available in more than 80% of leagues, so if your staff is light on starts this week go get Richards!

My two start pitcher to fade this week is Braves starter Julio Teheran.  Other than the fact that I am playing against Teheran this week so I am hoping that he stinks, he also has two tough matchups.  Teheran is on the road against the Cubbies and the Mets.  He has been good this year, but his advanced stats are screaming regression.  If you see the right hander on your waiver wire, let someone else take on that risk.

This week is a tough one to find quality two start pitchers.  Of course you have some stud aces pitching twice, but those guys aren’t available and if you are one of the lucky team owners to have them than your going to start them without any hesitation.  Looking at who might actually be available was a bit difficult, but there are a few.  If these guys are free agents in your league go ahead and give em a call.  They could be the guys to help you capture the win this week.  These matchups in the thick of the season can make all the difference when it comes to making the playoffs.

Good luck my fantasy friends…unless we are facing off.
