Do the New England Patriots Have Too Much Talent?

It seems like a silly question, right?  Can a team really have too much talent?  Rare are the occasions where a team having loads of talent is a detriment.  Maybe that is too strong of a generalization to make when it comes to the 2019 New England Patriots.  There are certainly positions where they may be a little light on talent  -- like tight end and offensive line.  However, there are other positions on this team, that are overflowing with talent.

Top to bottom, this roster is more talented than last year's Super Bowl winning roster.  As we head into the final preseason game, and roster cuts loom, Bill Belichick and his staff may face their toughest challenge all season long, before the season actually begins.  How do they trim this roster down to 53 guys?

If you tune into tonight's preseason finale, you're going to see some talented guys out there who likely are going to find themselves on the wrong side of roster cuts.  Guys who have made plays all preseason long.  There is always a surprising cut, or two, each season, but it feels like there are going to be a handful of notable dismissals this year.

Just a few weeks ago, wide receiver was perceived as a weakness for this team.  Since then, Julian Edelman has returned to practice, Josh Gordon was conditionally reinstated and Demaryius Thomas continues to progress in his rehab from his Achilles injury.  Now, with this newfound depth, the outlook has changed drastically.

Shop for NFL Gear at Fanatics!Take a guy like Phillip Dorsett.  Here's a guy who, while he may not have been a key contributor in last year's offense, appeared in all 16 games and was targeted at least once in all but one game.  His relationship and rapport with Tom Brady continued to develop, and we saw evidence of it in the most recent preseason game.

A few weeks ago, Dorsett was being viewed as maybe the #3 receiver, and all of a sudden he is a fringe guy; potentially fifth on the depth chart.  While I think he'll ultimately make the team, his spot doesn't feel as secure as it probably should.

The Patriots rarely carry three quarterbacks on the 53-man roster, but Jarrett Stidham's performance has him deserving of a roster spot.  Will it come at the expense of Brian Hoyer?

The defensive line and defensive backfield are both deep as well.  A guy like Deatrich Wise Jr., who hasn't missed a game in his two seasons with the Patriot, a guy who has 9.5 sacks in two seasons, and had 5 tackles in last year's Super Bowl; according to the guys who cover the team, his spot on the roster isn't secure.

We've already had a couple of noteworthy releases.  Mike Pennel was looked at as a potential opening day starter early in camp.  All of a sudden, Danny Shelton emerged, and Pennel was released.

On offense, Maurice Harris looked like he had developed some early chemistry with Tom Brady, and then had a strong performance in the preseason opener.  Then he suffers an injury, other receivers return, and he finds himself unemployed.

Heck, Ryan Allen could have made a case for Super Bowl MVP this past February and he became a roster casualty about a week ago.  While these weren't groundbreaking releases, they were of some note, and perhaps a sign of things to come.

Former early round draft picks like Derek Rivers (3rd round) and Duke Dawson (2nd) find themselves on the bubble.  Injuries in their rookie seasons put each of them behind the eight ball, and now with a surplus of talent at their respective positions, they don't have the luxury of time on their side.  The Patriots can't afford to be too patient with these guys, when there are other, more capable players around them.

Tonight's game against the New York Giants is the last chance for guys to showcase themselves.  If you're on the field tonight, chances are that you're fighting for a spot.  For guys at certain positions, no matter how well they may play tonight, or may have played all preseason long, it's not going to make a difference.  The Patriots just have too much talent.
