Can Isaiah Wynn Save the Run Game?

SHARE:

Let's start quickly with Monday's game.  There's honestly not much to say.  I was confident the Pats would win, but thought the Jets might hang around for a little bit; kind of like how the Giants did.  I didn't expect what happened to happen.  You can say what you want about the competition - get it all out now because starting next week, that excuse becomes invalid.  However, no other defense is making these offenses look this inept.

The defense is legitimately making me laugh out loud at opposing quarterbacks.  Case in point, Monday night.  As I'm watching the second half, and Sam Darnold uncorks another interception, I started laughing.  From our bedroom down the hall, my wife yells out to me, "did he just throw another interception?"  This is the most entertaining defense I have ever watched, and I cannot wait to see them over the next several weeks as they play better competition.

However, more often than not, he's going to reach the line of scrimmage, and not get much further.  I've been holding out hope that despite not having the desired talent, Dante Scarnecchia would be able to piece things together and coach it up into a above average unit.  Not only that, but Isaiah Wynn should be coming back at some point to help bolster things.

As the games pass, I'm starting to believe that this may not be the case.

Wynn's return will definitely improve things, but I think mostly in pass protection.  The Pats did a great job of utilizing quick throws on Monday night to make the line play largely irrelevant.  With how fast Tom Brady was getting rid of the ball, all the lineman had to do was not fall down when the ball was snapped. However, that's not a sustainable offense.

The return of Wynn will shore up the left side of that line, and Brady can feel a little more confident in his dropbacks.  He'll be able to take more 5-step drops, and allow receivers some time to get down the field, rather than taking the snap and throwing the ball a yard or two past the line of scrimmage.

We saw how things went on opening night, with Wynn in the lineup.  It was one of Brady's better, if not best, performances of the year.  He was taking, and connecting, on shots downfield because he had the time.  I'm not so sure Wynn's presence will have the same type of impact on the run game.

He may be able to help with some off tackle runs, but the Patriots were at their best last year running up the middle.  That's where the absence of David Andrews is being felt this year.  There's just little to no push at all from Ted Karras on most plays.  Last year, behind Andrews, Shaq Mason and Joe Thuney, the Pats rushing attack thrived.

Thuney and Mason are still there, but they haven't been as effective as they were last year.  It makes you realize just how valuable and underappreciated Andrews was, and is.

James Develin was instrumental too, hitting the hole before Michel, and clearing a path.  While he definitely has been missed this year, there haven't been a ton of holes opened up that he would have been able to run through.

So, while the return of Wynn will definitely provide a boost to this line, I'm not so sure it's going to help the run game all that much.
