Why Can't Patriots Fans Just Be Happy?

The New England Patriots are 6-0, have an average margin of defeat of almost 24 points, and are once again in the driver’s seat for home field advantage throughout the playoffs.  Still, fans are finding things to complain about.

As a Patriots fan, do you ever wonder why we are universally despised across NFL fan bases?  Yes, the consistent winning has something to do with it; but we – the fans – are just as much of a factor.  We’ve been spoiled so much by the team’s success, that we don’t allow ourselves to enjoy the season if we don’t think a Super Bowl victory is in the cards.

Fans have grown accustomed to Tom Brady and the Patriots offense operating like a well-oiled machine, and constantly bailing out an average defense.  Now that the tables have turned, fans don’t know how to react.  The offense is laboring through four quarters, as the defense dominates, but the end result is the same.  Unfortunately, that's not good enough for a faction of Pats Nation.

Shop the newest New England Patriots fan gear at Fanatics! The Patriots literally have the number one scoring offense, and number one scoring defense.  Yes, they have not played the best competition.  That's not their fault.  You can only play who is in front of you.  It's one thing to beat teams you are better than, and it's another to dominate them the way the Patriots are.

The Boston sports media doesn't help.  I get it though.  It's their job to say ridiculous things in an effort to generate content and attention.  I mean, the Patriots haven't lost a game, and we're over here talking about how Brady hates the rookies.  They're stirring the pot, and the fans are eating right from it.

I’m curious as to what other city’s fan base operates this way?  The San Francisco 49ers are 5-0, are third in scoring offense and second in scoring defense.  Are they complaining that Jimmy Garoppolo has yet to throw for 300 yards in a single game?  I wonder how many people were upset that they only scored 20 points against a Rams defense that ranks 25th in points allowed per game.

Are we really going to do this again this year?  Have people not learned their lesson yet?  I thought after last year these types of conversations would cease.  Silly me.

Remember last year, when the defense allowed 30+ points to Jacksonville, Miami and Tennessee?  Remember last year, when the defense allowed Brandon Bolden to rush for 60 yards and two TD's on two rush attempts?

Then, remember how they transformed towards the tail end of last season?  They were the story during the playoffs, and instrumental to winning Super Bowl LIII.  They didn’t add any reinforcements.  Nobody returned from injury.  This was just a case of a group improving as the season progressed.

Why are we acting like that can’t happen with the offense this year?  Is it really out of the realm of possibility for an offense led by Tom Brady to improve?  This unit is actually slated to receive some help in the coming weeks.  Wide receiver and offensive line are the two weakest points of the offense at this point, but help could be on the way.

This year’s first round pick, N’Keal Harry, re-joined his fellow wide receivers on the practice field this week.  Bill Belichick has stated that mentally Harry is ready to be on the field, but it’s going to be how he holds up physically that will determine if he’s involved on gameday.

Last year’s first round pick, Isaiah Wynn, could help reinforce the left side of the offensive line in a major way.  He's not eligible to return for another couple of weeks, but would provide a major boost if he's able to rejoin the lineup.

The Patriots are undefeated, have won 11 consecutive games dating back to last season, have won three of the last five Super Bowls and fans are still complaining.  This is why people hate us.  Sit back and enjoy this, because in a few years, you'll really have something to complain about.
