The Circling Ravens...

The buzz around the NFL these last few weeks has been the rise of the flashy and seemingly unstoppable Baltimore Ravens.  Quarterback Lamar Jackson has played like a man possessed, leading his team to seven straight victories and earning himself chants of “MVP” that can be heard on television broadcasts.  The discussion can certainly be made for the young star who has led his team to seven straight victories.  Yet despite the stellar play of the Ravens in their recent takedown of some of the top teams in the league (including the Patriots, Texans and the Rams) the talking heads of the football world have largely kept the Patriots atop the Power Ranking charts.

The argument for keeping the Patriots atop that list is currently a losing one, despite their 10-1 record.  The lackluster play of the offense needs to be addressed before we even think about ranking the Patriots as the top dog in the league.  The addition of Isaiah Wynn last weekend, despite some suggestion that it would, didn’t immediately sort out the team’s offensive woes.  While the replacement of Marshall Newhouse will certainly be a help for this team in the long run, what will be the biggest obstacle to overcome is Tom Brady and his relationship and trust in his current pool of receivers.

It’s been a constant issue throughout the season, and one of the key components to that is the quarterback’s trust with some of his young receivers.  Earlier in the season Brady was quoted in calling out the younger Patriots in needing to step up and contribute.  In recent weeks, the young receivers N’Keal Harry (who was sidelined with a hamstring injury) and undrafted free agent Jakobi Meyers have begun to show flashes of being significant threats for the aging quarterback.

N’Keal Harry caught his first career pass from Brady against the Philadelphia Eagles, ending the game with 3 receptions for 18 yards.  This past week he caught his first career Touchdown pass (the 75th different receiver for Tom Brady to do so.)

Jakobi Meyers, while not yet having found the end zone, has certainly built trust with his reported work ethic in practice and results on the field when given the opportunity.  The future looks bright.  The question is, will the offense figure it out in time for the 2019 season.

Even with the Patriots offensive struggles they find themselves heading into NRG stadium in Houston this Sunday night currently holding the Number 1 seed in the AFC.  This will be another huge test for the defense, and hopefully another opportunity for the offense to find a rhythm in Wynn’s second game back and the hopeful return of some injured offensive weapons in Mohamed Sanu Sr. and Phillip Dorsett II.

Should they stumble again, the Ravens stand poised to snatch away that Number 1 seed and the seat atop the NFL power rankings.
