College Football Playoff Preview: THE Ohio State

In just his first full year as the Head Coach, Ryan Day is playing for a National College Championship.  Not only are they in the dance, but the Buckeyes are serious contenders.  I know that probably does not come as any kind of a surprise because every year this team seems to be at the top of the rankings.  But with Ryan Day at the helm the OSU program did not skip a beat.  Ohio State has been one of the best teams all season long both on offense and on defense.

The Buckeyes’ offense, led by future NFL quarterback Justin Fields is the highest scoring unit in all of college football.  This offense is electric, scoring 48.7 points a game and seemingly cannot be stopped.  Even when they were losing to Wisconsin, 21 to 7, in the Big Ten Championship Game they still ended up scoring 34 total points and winning by 13.  Ohio State’s offense is a juggernaut and will be very tough for Clemson or any other team to contain.

Justin Fields is a sophomore transfer signal caller from Georgia.  Fields had himself a great rookie season with the Buckeyes.  He finished third in the nation with 40 total touchdown passes, oh and the quarterback also added 10 more rushing touchdowns.  When someone throws for this many touchdowns it usually comes with some interceptions.  Well, not with Fields, he only threw one interception.  One…that’s it.  This kid is really good.   He can run this offense to perfection.  Fields may be the general on the field for the Buckeyes' offense, but he isn’t the only future NFL star.

Ohio State Buckeyes gear at Fanatics.comJ.K. Dobbins may be the best running back in college football.  Dobbins finished top 6 in rushing attempts, rushing yards and touchdowns.  He is a complete back who can finish any drive.  I think that shows in his 20 rushing touchdowns.  Clemson has a strong defense, maybe the best unit in 2019, but they will have their hands full this weekend with the rushing and passing attack that Ohio State will be bringing to the Playstation Fiesta Bowl Semi-Final.

Ohio State also has one of the top defenses in college football.  As a team they gave up the third lowest amount of points this season and had the second lowest yards allowed in 2019.  Their D is highlighted by defensive end Chase Young and cornerback Jeff Okudah.  Young may be the best college football player on the planet, and Okudah is arguably the best at his position.  Ohio State’s edge rusher could be a top 3 pick in the NFL draft if he decides to go pro.  He accounted for 16.5 sacks this year, a stat he led the nation in.  He’s quick, he’s fast, he’s strong and he is going to be a problem for anyone that is supposed to block him.  Chase Young is a potential game changer, a defensive player talented enough to win a game for the Buckeyes.

It is tough to predict how the OSU vs Clemson matchup will play out.  Trevor Lawrence and the rest of the Tiger offense have as many stars as the Buckeyes.  A game like this could become a shootout in a hurry.  Unfortunately, Justin Fields is battling through some knee issues.  Even though that could slow the offense, I can still see the total score being very high.  But is that my prediction?  No.

The Clemson defense is as good as any defense in the country, including OSU.  Matter of fact the Tigers has a higher ranked defense than OSU.  Given the matchup of top defenses and Fields being slowed by injury, I think scoring will not come easy.  My final score prediction…

Ohio State: 20
Clemson: 13
