Red Sox and Blue Jays Are Talking David Price Trade

The Boston Red Sox and Toronto Blue Jays have reportedly had conversations about trading left-handed pitcher David Price. Despite this interest the Blue Jays added Hyun-Jin Ryu to a four-year deal worth $80 million. The Price to Toronto could be smoke and mirrors or the Jays feel they’ll be serious competitors in the AL East.

Price, 34, was with Toronto back in 2015 when he was sent to Toronto from the Tigers in a trade deadline deal that brought back pitchers Matthew Boyd, Daniel Norris and Jairo Labourt.  While in Toronto, Price was 9-1 with a 2.30 ERA.  He was the AL Cy Young runner-up that season.

Price's time in Boston hasn't gone exactly to plan, despite the Red Sox winning the World Series back in 2018.  It'll be interesting to see if both sides get a deal done considering Price has three years and $96 million left on his contract.  The question remains how much money Chaim Bloom and the Red Sox will be willing to eat.

Price signed with the Red Sox back in 2016, where he and the team agreed to a seven-year $217 million dollar deal.  Price has averaged only 119 1/3 innings since the first year of his deal and has been hampered with injuries.  The Sox lefty had elbow issues in 2017 where he only pitched 74 2/3 innings.

The Red Sox need to get under the luxury tax and trading Price will help the team get into a better position to do so.  The Sox current payroll number is around $237 million, which would exceed the tax threshold by about $20 million dollars.  The Associated Press reported the Red Sox will pay a record $13.4 million dollars for exceeding the tax threshold for a second straight season.  The Red Sox will pay that penalty with nothing to show for it because they failed to make the playoffs coming off a World Series championship the year before.

The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal first reported the two teams are talking a Price trade and that a deal isn't imminent.  The Red Sox appear to be looking at a few different options in any Price trade, including eating money or attaching prospects or players on the current roster to maximize their return.

The Blue Jays have made it clear they are looking to improve their rotation,  This offseason they signed righty Tanner Roark to a two-year $24 million dollar deal and acquired righty Chase Anderson from the Brewers.

Price has been connected to a few teams this offseason, but with the White Sox signing lefty Dallas Keuchel, the Rangers acquiring Corey Kluber, and the Angels taking a flyer on Julio Teheran, the Sox options are dwindling on where Price can go.

It will be interesting to see where the Red Sox will deal Price.  Any potential move comes with risk since the Red Sox on paper look thin from a starting pitching perspective.  If the Red Sox move Price to the Blue Jays, it will be interesting to see what they'll get back in return and who they'll look to fill the void he will leave in the rotation.
