Red Sox Claim Mazza, Sign Andreoli and Seven Others

The Red Sox and Chaim Bloom were pretty active Friday with some minor league signings and claiming a player off waivers.

The Red Sox claimed right-handed pitcher Chris Mazza off waivers from the New York Mets to round out the 40-man roster.  Mazza, 30, made his big league debut in 2019 with the Mets on June 29th.  He had a 5.51 ERA, 1.59 WHIP, and 11 strikeouts in 16 1/3 major league innings for the Mets.

Embrace the past in Retro-Style with Cooperstown Collection jerseys and apparel from Mazza tweeted today, "can't wait to start my new journey with the Red Sox and put a uniform that I haven't worn since I was 12 years old!"

Mazza was designated for assignment last week after the Mets signed former St. Louis Cardinals righty Michael Wacha to a one-year deal.  Wacha joins the Mets who hope he can be a rotation replacement for Zach Wheeler, who signed with the Phillies earlier this offseason.  Wacha will be joined by former Red Sox right-hander Rick Porcello, who joined the Mets this offseason on a one-year deal.

The Red Sox also added eight minor league free agents.  The Sox have added catcher Jett Bandy, IF Jantzen White, IF/OF Nick Longhi, OF John Andreoli, LHP Mike Kickham, RHP R.J. Alvarez, Domingo Tapia and Robinson Leyer.  Each player was invited to Spring Training as a non-roster invitee.

Andreoli has a New England connection.  The Shrewsbury, MA native made his major league debut with the Baltimore Orioles last season.  In 23 games with the Orioles last season he hit .232 with no homers and four RBI.

Andreoli spent six seasons in the Chicago Cubs system.  He was drafted in the 17th round out of UConn in 2011.  Andreoli has prided himself with his base running and defense, is hoping to find a home with the local club.

Andreoli can provide depth in the system for the Sox.  Andreoli would be a nice addition to Triple-A Pawtucket and be able to provide depth if the Sox lose a player to the IL over the course of the season.

Fun fact about Andreoli, his father, also named John, played for the New England Patriots and he is also cousins with former Sox righty Daniel Bard.

The players signed and claimed today will add depth to the Sox, something Bloom has talked about since becoming the CBO of the Red Sox.  Bloom who has a history of doing more with less, and he has to do the same with the luxury tax/money strapped Sox.
