Red Sox Should Demand Gavin Lux in a Betts to LA Trade

The Red Sox and Dodgers could swing a trade that sends former AL MVP Mookie Betts to Hollywood.  According to USA Today's Bob Nightengale, the Dodgers have had discussions with the Red Sox about a potential trade.

Betts is expected to make about $27 million in his final year of his contract with the Red Sox.  It has been no secret this offseason that the Red Sox are trying to slash payroll and get under the $208 million dollar tax threshold to avoid luxury tax penalties from the league.

Nightengale suggested that the Dodgers could send the Red Sox Corey Seager back in a trade for Betts.  The Red Sox should set their sights on prized prospect Gavin Lux, but the Dodgers have made it clear he remains untouchable for the time being.  The Red Sox could also look at Dodgers catcher Will Smith, who last season hit 15 home runs and had 42 RBI in 54 games as a rookie.

According to Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News, a hypothetical Betts to the Dodgers trade could net the Red Sox OF Joc Pederson, RHP Dustin May and C Keibert Ruiz.

The Red Sox should look to try and get Lux back in return for Betts.  The 22-year-old made his MLB debut this September after dominating in the minors.  Lux hit .313 with 13 homers in Double-A, and then hit .392 with 13 homers in Triple-A in only 199 at-bats.  MLB Pipeline ranked Lux as the second best prospect in all of baseball for 2019.  Lux should figure into the Dodgers 2020 plans, but Chaim Bloom should be adamant on Lux for Betts.

The Dodgers haven't landed any free agents they've appeared to be interested in this offseason.  The Yankees signed Gerrit Cole and the Angels signed Anthony Rendon leaving the Dodgers fans desperately wanting more.

Overall it has been a quiet offseason for the Dodgers.

The number one thing to mention is the Dodgers have had exploratory talks with Boston regarding Betts.  Conversations for players, especially those of Betts' magnitude happen every offseason.  The Dodgers are doing their due diligence in expressing interest in Betts and the Red Sox are doing their due diligence by seeing what each player on the roster, not only Betts, could net them back in return.

The Red Sox would rather trade lefty David Price to slash payroll and roll the dice on Betts in the offseason.  At this point, Betts' camp has made it crystal clear to Boston he wants to experience free agency.
