Red Sox Should Sign Reliever Steve Cishek

The Red Sox are still searching for bullpen help this offseason.  The relatively quiet Red Sox have only added RHP Chris Mazza and LHP Josh Osich, both off waivers.  The team could still use more depth in the back end of the rotation, and if they’re going to sign someone it’ll have to be a free agent that wants to take a smaller deal to play here.

One free agent available has New England ties that would be a good fit for the Red Sox bullpen.  Ten-year major league veteran righty Steve Cishek is still looking for work and, according to The Athletic’s Peter Gammons, Cishek wants to pitch for Boston.  According to Gammons, Falmouth’s Cishek, who made $7.1 million last season, appears currently to be out of Boston’s pay range.

With the Cubs last season, Cishek was 4-6 with a 2.95 ERA.  In 70 games with the Cubs, he had seven saves, allowing only 21 ER over 64 innings.  Over the span of the last four years, Cishek has averaged 61 games, 2.52 ERA. 9.3 K/9, and a 1.05 WHIP.

Statistically Cishek has numbers that would look great for the Red Sox bullpen.  The veteran righty has been a consistent piece to the last few teams’ pens he’s pitched out of.  Consistency is one thing the Red Sox are looking for, especially in the bullpen.
Cishek will provide the Sox with some stability in that part of their bullpen if Matt Barnes and Ryan Braiser are inconsistent next year.  Plus, with having closer experience, if the current closer Brandon Workman struggles, manager Alex Cora could slide Cishek into the ninth inning role.  Cishek owns 132 saves to his record.

Cishek’s sidearm delivery gives his opponents a different look from the right side.  He’s not an overpowering pitcher with a fastball, his fastball is about 90mph.  Right handers hit .206 against Cishek while lefties hit .216.  Cishek could be a viable option against left-handed hitters.  With the new three batter minimum this season, Cishek wouldn’t be a liability against right or left handed hitters.

MLB Trade Rumors projected Cishek to earn a 2-year $10 million dollar deal in free agency this year.  As the offseason drags on, it’s less likely he’ll earn that kind of money.  Even if he does, the cash strapped Sox could carve out $5 million for a viable bullpen arm.

Cishek makes too much sense as a viable bullpen arm for Cora’s bullpen.  The quiet Sox front offseason needs to figure out how to move some money to add more depth, and players with experience to the roster.  New England’s own Cishek wants to pitch in Boston, but it appears Boston just doesn’t have the money.
