The Patriots Offensive Struggles Continue

The Patriots have officially fumbled the #1 seed for the 2019 AFC Playoffs, and getting it back will be no easy task.

After dropping a frustrating game to the Houston Texans at NRG Stadium on Sunday night, the Patriots currently share their 10-2 record with the Baltimore Ravens, with the Ravens holding the tiebreaker.

Sunday night was yet another sloppy performance by the offense, and another humbling defeat for one of the top defenses in the league.  While the defense allowed the Texans offense to put up 28 points, the New England offense faltered at almost every step, scoring two TDs late in the game, against a softening Houston defense, to make the final score appear closer than the game really was.

Shop for NFL Collectibles and Memorabilia at Fanatics! The stagnating offense remains a lingering problem and a source of major concern for Bill Belichick and company.  Brady once again looked frustrated and downright angry at various points throughout the night and on more than one occasion Brady, after making his read and working through his progressions, chucked a ball to the open field only for it to land without a receiver in sight.

Thus far the young receivers that are a part of this offense have not been able to get on the same page as the 3X League MVP.  The continued struggles by the young wideouts, and the lack of a real threat at Tight End, has left Brady to largely focus on his favorite targets Julian Edelman (12 Targets, 6 Receptions for 106 yards, 1 TD) and James White (11 Targets, 8 Receptions for 98 yards, 2 TDs).

This is not to take away from the performance of the Houston Texans.  Their offense appeared to be firing on all cylinders with Deshaun Watson completing 18/25 passes for 234 yards and three TDs.   DeAndre Hopkins even got into the mix with an unorthodox passing touchdown of his own on a double handoff - forward pass to Deshaun Watson.

In the slate of games that were considered to be their toughest of the 2019 season, the Patriots are 2-2 with the Chiefs and Bills still to come.  The end of the 2019 season will be an interesting one, and one that a lot of New England fans haven’t been used to over the last several years.  There is some strong competition atop the AFC, and the Patriots have a fight on their hands.

If this offense doesn’t wake up and find their identity, it’ll be a grueling uphill battle for the remainder of the season and into the playoffs.

The Patriots face the Kansas City Chiefs in Gillette Stadium this Sunday (12/08) with kickoff scheduled for 4:25 PM on CBS. - Customized NFL Gear
