The Red Sox have fired manager Alex Cora

Ironic huh?  The Boston Red Sox have fired manager Alex Cora for his role in the 2018 electronic sign stealing scandal.  Red Sox owner John Henry made the decision to let go of his manager and move his organization forward.

The Red Sox organization released a statement saying, “Today we met to discuss the Commissioner’s report related to the Houston Astros investigation.  Given the findings and the Commissioner’s ruling, we collectively decided that it would not be possible for Alex to effectively lead the club going forward and we mutually agreed to part ways.”

MLBshop.com The Official Online Shop of Major League BaseballIn his two years as manager of the Red Sox, Cora was 192-132, won one AL East division title and his club won the 2018 World Series.  That 2018 Red Sox team won 108 games in the regular season and was dominate all year.

Now, we’ll question that team.  It does feel a little tarnished that we’ll never know how much of the alleged electronic sign stealing scandal helped the 2018 team.  Three players who were with that World Series Champion Red Sox told The Athletic “that during the regular season, at least some players visited the video replay room during games to learn the sign sequence opponents were using.”  The replay room is steps away from the Red Sox home dugout at Fenway Park.

Those sources, according to The Athletic, said the Red Sox did not use the sign stealing scheme in the postseason.

Cora is now out of a job and awaiting his discipline from MLB.  As we know, Cora was heavily involved in the 2017 Houston Astros sign stealing scandal.  Cora allegedly devised a scheme where cameras and trash barrels were being used to alert players of pitches coming.  Cora was named 11 times in MLB’s nine-page report on the Astros cheating scandal.

The Athletic reported, “Cora was involved in developing both the banging scheme and utilizing the replay review room to decode and transmit signs.  Cora participated in both schemes, and through his active participation, implicitly condoned the players' conduct.  I will withhold determining the appropriate level of discipline for Cora until after the DOI completes its investigation of the allegations that the Red Sox engaged in impermissible electronic sign stealing in 2018 while Cora was the manager.”

Cora’s arrogance has been one of his down fall.  In 2016, Cora tweeted “Stealing signs, relaying signs, getting signs…not that easy.”  That tweet on top of Cora being fired isn’t going to age well.  While it might be true, it’s difficult to steal signs, it’s a lot easier to use cameras and electronics to see what pitch is coming next.

What is next for the Red Sox?  The team needs a manager and the current logical choice is Bench Coach Ron Roenicke.  Roenicke, 63, was the former Milwaukee Brewers manager from 2011-15.  He led the Brewers to 96 wins and led the BrewCrew to an NLCS appearance.  Roenicke could be a one year stop gap until next offseason, until CBO Chaim Bloom can hire his own manager to lead the Red Sox.  Unless Roenicke had a part in the 2018 sign stealing scandal.  If that’s the case the club should look externally for a new manager.
