Devers Is the Only Untouchable Red Sox

We’ve seen Chaim Bloom shop the clearance discount bin for additions to his roster for his first offseason as Red Sox Chief Baseball Officer.  The Red Sox are currently around $228 million dollars for payroll, that’s a number ownership wants Bloom to get under the $208 million dollar mark.

If the Red Sox trade the face of the franchise in Mookie Betts it will be seen as a disaster to fans and media.  Especially if Betts has to be included in a David Price trade to eliminate the portion or majority of the $96 million the Sox owe him.

There is one player that Bloom needs to make untouchable, and that’s third baseman Rafael Devers.

There hasn’t been chatter around the possibility of trading Devers.  Even in possible Price trades the names are Betts and Andrew Benintendi that keep coming up as a player attached in any potentially rumored deal.

Shop for LSU Tigers Champs Gear Devers isn’t arbitration eligible until after the 2021 season, so if the Sox can shift money around and sign him to an extension that would be seen as ideal.

Devers hit .311 with 32 homers, 115 RBIs and an OPS of .916 in 2019.  He also set a franchise record for hits and extra base hits, 90 before the age of 23.  The Red Sox have a stud third basemen for years to come, and Bloom needs to ensure he locks him up.

Betts made $614 K this past season for the Red Sox.  Considering Devers should have been an MVP finalist, the Red Sox only have two more seasons of Devers being incredibly cheap.

Despite being under Red Sox control until 2024, the Sox should try and get Devers to a team-friendly deal similar to shortstop Xander Bogaerts.  Bogey signed a six year, $120 million dollar extension last season.  That extension was one of the few gifts former President of Baseball Ops Dave Dombrowski gave to the team.

The Houston Astros did the same with stud third baseman Alex Bregman before last season.  Bregman and the Astros agreed to a six-year, $100 million contract extension.  The deal covered last season and all three years of arbitration.

The Red Sox need to reward Devers and do so once they move some money around on the roster.  Locking up Devers and Bogaerts will give the team a solid duo on the left side of the diamond for the next five or six years.
