Dustin Pedroia Suffers "Significant Setback"

Dustin Pedroia has suffered a setback in his attempt to comeback and play baseball for the Red Sox in 2020.  According to Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe, Pedroia suffered a “significant setback” while rehabbing his left knee.

This is another setback in Pedroia’s attempt to play again.  Pedroia has struggled to stay healthy over the last two seasons.  He has only played on nine games over the last two years.

MLB Jerseys at Fanatics.comAbraham noted that Pedroia will meet with his family and the team over the coming days to go over his options.  If this is truly the end for Pedroia, he will go down as a Red Sox great.  During his tenure from 2007-2016, Pedey hit .303, was a four time All-Star, a former AL MVP, AL Rookie of the Year, and helped the Red Sox win two World Series championships.

Pedroia is under contract with the Red Sox over the next two seasons, and he is owed $25 million dollars.

Pedroia, who underwent knee joint preservation surgery last season on his left knee, suffered a few setbacks which limited him to six games.

Following last season’s surgery, Pedroia made it public that he wanted to get back to becoming an everyday player again for the Red Sox.  Pedroia hasn’t been right since former Orioles infielder Manny Machado slid into Pedroia back in 2017.  At the time it was argued whether it was a clean or dirty slide.  Former Sox Manager John Farrell would go on to say "If the rule is in place to protect the middle infielder, then it didn't work tonight," Farrell said.  "It was a late slide."

The Red Sox would help get retribution against Machado when Chris Sale struck out Machado in the World Series in 2018.

We are now three seasons removed from the last time Pedroia was an everyday player, and given he’s 36 years old and this latest setback, the writing may be on the wall for the second baseman.

The Red Sox have players on the roster to play second base as they transition from Pedroia.  The club signed Jose Peraza this offseason.  In addition to Peraza, the club has Michael Chavis, Rule-5 selection Jonathan Arauz, Tzu-Wei Lin, C.J. Chatham, Marco Hernandez and Josh Tobias.

The Red Sox could turn to current free agent Brock Holt to replace Pedroia, but that is doubtful due to the Peraza signing this offseason.  Peraza is the leading candidate to be the everyday second baseman for the Red Sox.  Peraza is only 26, and has experience playing all infield positions and some outfield.

With the news of Pedroia suffering this newest setback, it's clear that he’s heading towards retirement from the game.  If this is the case, Pedroia will go down as a Red Sox great.  A dirt dog who played the game right and the heart and soul of the franchise.
