Is It Time For Jarrett Stidham to "Do His Job"?

SHARE:

The 2020 NFL Draft will be an important one as the aging Patriots begin to transform into a younger team.  The Patriots will have many question marks coming into the off-season, especially surrounding Quarterback Tom Brady and whether he’ll be back in Foxboro and finish his storied career with the Patriots.

Will QB Jarrett Stidham be the man to take over the reigns from Brady if he elects to depart from One Patriot Place?

Stidham only completed two passes this past season.  He was two of four, with 14-yards and one interception in three appearances for the Patriots this past season.  That interception came against the Washington Redskins back in October.  The Patriots 2019 fourth-round pick spent his entire rookie season as Brady’s backup.

Brady’s remaining 2020-2021 contract can be voided on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17, 2020.  If voided it will leave $13.5 million dollars in dead money on the cap according to Spotrac.  Brady’s new deal he signed has a provision in his contract that he cannot be franchise tagged by the organization.  If he voids his deal, he’ll walk away from two more years and become a free agent for the first time in his storied career.

Whoever is the next QB of the Patriots has a very daunting task of replacing the GOAT.  But the team thinks they have something with the former Auburn prospect.

This season, Stidham spent a lot of time taking first-team offensive reps in practice.  “I feel like for me, any reps you can get, try to take advantage of it,” Stidham said.  “It’s obviously good to get more reps and that kind of thing because it’s in the middle of the season and we’re a long way from training camp.  A lot of it is mental reps, but any time I can actually get physical reps I’m trying to take advantage of those.”

Behind the scenes players on both sides of the ball have taken notice of Stidham.  The rookie QB has been impressing his teammates with his ability to throw the deep ball.

“You see throws out there that he makes where you’re just like, ‘wow,’ ” said Patriots safety Duron Harmon.  “You can tell he has the intangibles to be a good pro quarterback.”

High praise from anyone to say the first year QB has intangibles to be a pro quarterback.

It’s been reported this season that offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels has said Stidham is one of the first to the facility and last to leave.  That sounds like a young former sixth-round pick out of Michigan who put the work in and answered the call when Drew Bledsoe went down almost 20 years ago.

The pressures of being a backup QB in the league can be daunting for anyone, let alone for Stidham, who potentially can become the next Patriots QB.  Stidham has spent extra time working with Patriots assistant quarterbacks coach Mick Lombardi and Patriots third-string quarterback Cody Kessler.

Kessler was quoted in saying “He’s a great player, he’s really competitive, really a good player.  It’s cool because when we do our quarterback drills, we throw and we’re always competing and having a good time with each other.  It’s a really good quarterback room in my opinion and he’s been throwing the ball really well.”

Whatever Stidham is doing, people are taking notice.  This bodes well as the Patriots begin to figure out what’s next behind center next season.

The Patriots has the next QB, but he’s now in San Francisco.  Jimmy Garoppolo has shined outside of New England proving Bill Belichick found and developed the right man to take over for Brady.  Jimmy G is gone, and now Stidham is here.  The team feels strongly that Stidham has talent.  It’s arguably still early for the former fourth-rounder, and the team may sign a veteran to bridge the gap.  But it’s also very likely that TB12 will remain with the Patriots.

Whatever does happen, this will be the most important off-season in the history of the franchise.  If Brady is out, then Stidham is likely next man up, and it’ll be time to do his job.
