Rays Coaches Look To Be Off Limits

Chaim Bloom is very familiar with the Tampa Bay Rays, having spent 14 years with the organization.  Will he look to hire someone from Rays Manager Kevin Cash’s staff?

From the outset, let me say that if Bloom could bring Cash in as the next manager of the Red Sox, that would be a nice win and replacement for Alex Cora.

The former Red Sox catcher spent two years here as a player back in 2008-2009.  From a player perspective, Cash is very familiar with Boston.

Shop for NHL Gear at Fanatics!Cash is coming off back-to-back 90 win seasons for the low budget Rays.  But he’s not available, the Rays have him locked up through 2024 with an option for 2025.

The manager the Red Sox could turn to is his bench coach Matt Quatraro.

Quatraro, 46, has been with the Rays and Indians as a coach.  He’s held various roles through the minors for the Rays and was the Indians assistant hitting coach back in 2014.

The Rays hired Quatraro in 2017 and he served as Cash’s Third Base Coach.  Last season Quatraro served as Bench Coach.

The Giants and Pirates both interviewed Quatraro this past offseason before choosing other candidates.

The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal suggests that Quatraro is unlikely to leave Tampa for Boston.  According to Rosenthal, Rays executives that leave the organization rarely take members of the staff with them.

In this case Bloom is not taking Quatraro with him.  He would be requesting permission from the Rays to interview him for his managerial vacancy.  It is unknown whether the Rays have a policy in place to prevent former executives to lure coaches to their new organizations.

It’s safe to say Bloom trusts Quatraro.  Obviously he knows him well.  He is known to have excellent communication skills and was a finalist for the Pirates job this season.  He’s on the verge of becoming a manager.

If the Rays prevent Bloom from interviewing Quatraro, Bloom will need to look in another direction.

Bloom surely has a list of managerial candidates.  The question is, does he remain in-house with Bench Coach Ron Roenicke or Third Base coach Carlos Febles?  That will be answered in the next coming weeks.
