Red Sox Acquire LHP Matt Hall, DFA RHP Travis Lakins

The Red Sox acquired left-handed pitcher Matt Hall from the Detroit Tigers on Friday.  The move continues to add more depth to the Red Sox bullpen and the upper levels of the minors.

Hall, 26, made 16 relief appearances for the Tigers last season.  He was 0-1 with a 9.48 ERA.  He was made expendable off the 40-man roster after the Tigers signed starter Ivan Nova.  The Red Sox will send minor league catcher Jhon Nuñez to the Tigers in exchange for Hall.

In Triple-A Toledo, Hall posted a 5.30 ERA in 86.2 innings.  He pitched in 25 games, and also started 13 games.

Hall was a sixth-round selection in the 2015 draft for the Tigers.  The southpaw was drafted out of Missouri State.  He has swing and miss stuff, but not due to his fastball.  Hall has a vicious curveball.

Hall's fastball barely tops out at 90 mph, and scouts have described it as having little movement.  His curveball, on the other hand, has some spin.  In fact, ranks his curve spin as great.

So what does that mean?  It means with an above average curveball like that, he can play that off his fastball.  In essence, his fastball will look and feel faster to the batter.

Chaim Bloom is adding depth and is doing so on the cheap.  Hall brings depth to the upper part of the Red Sox system which they'll sorely need.

The Red Sox had to dip into their catching depth in order to make this move.  Nuñez was expected to join Triple-A Pawtucket this season after hitting .280 in 211 at-bats.  He hit five home runs and drove in 21 RBI.

The Red Sox recently re-signed Nuñez this past December.  The Tigers announced they have invited the catcher to spring training as a non-roster invitee.

From a catching perspective the team needs to rebuild its overall depth behind the dish.  According to, the organization has one catcher ranked out of 60 prospects.  Kole Cottam, who is a catcher for the Salem Red Sox, is ranked 54th.

The 22-year old Cotam projects as more of role player and could play some first base.  He is offensively better at the dish than he is defensively behind the dish.  The fourth-round pick out of Kentucky could provide depth for the Red Sox, but shouldn't be looked at as the answer long term.

On the Major League roster, the Sox have Christian Vasquez and Kevin Plawecki.  Bloom signed Jett Bandy to a minor-league deal in December to bring depth to the Triple-A level.  If we go deeper into the system, the club has Charlie Madden and Austin Rei in Portland.

To facilitate Hall onto the 40-man roster, the Red Sox designated for assignment righty Travis Lakins.  The former sixth-rounder was hampered by elbow injuries in 2016 and 2017.  He made his Major League debut last season and posted a 3.86 ERA.

Bargain Bin Bloom continues to shop the clearance racks in order to gain overall organizational depth to the roster.  Only time will tell if Hall will be a contributor to the big league
