Red Sox Acquire RHP Austin Brice From Miami

The Boston Red Sox swung a trade on Friday to acquire RHP Austin Brice from the Miami Marlins.  Brice was recently designated for assignment by the Marlins after the club signed outfielder Corey Dickerson.  The Red Sox acquired Brice in an exchange for minor-league infielder Angeudis Santos.

To make room for Brice, the Red Sox designated infielder Marco Hernandez for assignment.

Brice, 27, was 1-0
last season and posted a 3.43 ERA with 46 strikeouts in 36 games for the Marlins.  He spent time on the IL for a forearm flexor strain after the All-Star break.  Brice didn't fair well once coming off the IL, in fact he got lit up by opposing hitters.  He would end up back on the IL with a season-ending forearm strain at the end of August.

Despite the injuries, Brice had a successful 2019 in Miami.  If he can stay healthy for the Red Sox, he could be a contributor for manager Alex Cora out of the pen.

Brice will feature four pitches, a four seam fastball. curve, sinker and change up.  His curveball is the pitch he relies the most on.  According to the website Baseball Savant, last season he threw his curve 44.7% of the time to opposing hitters.  His opponents hit .172 against his curve and .179 against his four seam heater.

Brice was a ninth-round pick and debuted with the Marlins back in 2016.  He was traded in 2017 to the Cincinnati Reds for right hander Dan Straily.  The Marlins reacquired Brice off waivers before last season when the Marlins designated him for assignment.

Brice is out of options, so if the Red Sox want to stash him in Triple-A Pawtucket, he will need to clear waivers if he doesn't make the team out of Spring Training.

Hernandez lost his spot on the 40-man roster for the second time this offseason.  The infielder will need to clear waivers to come back to Boston.  The Sox have a crowded second base picture at the moment, with Dustin Pedroia, Jose Peraza, rule-5 pick Jonathan Arauz, Tzu-Wei Lin and C.J. Chatham vying for a spot.

The infielder Santos the Marlins are receiving is an 18-year old from the Dominican Republic, he hit .184 last season in 56 games.
