Report: Red Sox Used Replay Room For Sign Stealing In 2018

The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal and Evan Drellich are reporting the Boston Red Sox used a replay room for sign stealing in the 2018 regular season.

Three people who worked for the Red Sox during the 2018 season, the same season they won the World Series over the Los Angeles Dodgers, said players would frequent the replay room to learn sign sequences teams were using.

“It’s cheating,” one person who was with the 2018 Red Sox said, according to the Athletic.  “Because if you’re using a camera to zoom in on the crotch of the catcher, to break down the sign system, and then take that information and give it out to the runner, then he doesn’t have to steal it.”

This set of allegations comes on the heels of the Houston Astros cheating scandal.  The Red Sox have a tie to that cheating scandal, that’s current manager Alex Cora, who was the Astros bench coach during the 2017 season.

Cora is deeply mentioned in the Astros sign stealing allegations.  According to once again, The Athletic, Cora played a key role in devising the sign-stealing system the Astros used in 2017.  The Astros sign stealing system that was surrounded around a centerfield camera and a television monitor that was placed on the wall steps away from the Astros dugout at Minute Maid Park.  Team employees and players would sit by the monitor and bang on a trash can to reveal the expected pitch from the opposing team.

Regarding the Red Sox situation, Major League Baseball has commented on this matter by saying “the commissioner made clear in a September 15, 2017 memorandum to clubs how seriously he would take future violation of regulations regarding use of electronic equipment or the inappropriate use of the MLB replay room.  Given these allegations, MLB will commence an investigation into this matter.”

The Red Sox declined to comment at the time of publication from the Athletic.

The Red Sox were in trouble a few years ago back in 2017 for the use of Apple watches in the dugout.  They were given a small penalty and assured the league that would be a one time thing.  With the allegations of the use of the video replay room, one has to wonder the extent of punishment the team will see based off this new situation.

Will Cora get suspended for the Astros allegations?  If these new Red Sox allegations are true, it’s safe to say Cora will see a suspension based off the Astros and Red Sox seasons.

The accounts of the allegations were given to the Athletic on the condition on anonymity.  That these three individuals care about the integrity of the game.

As this story unfolds, it will be interesting to see to what level people knew what was happening on the field.  Also, whether Alex Cora will be suspended for his involvement in now two sign stealing scandals.
