Red Sox Should Fire Alex Cora

Report: Cora’s punishment expected to be “harsh”.

The Houston Astros have been disciplined by Major League Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred.  This all stems from the 2017 sign stealing scandal.

The punishment is severe.

The Astros Manager A.J. Hinch and General Manager Jeff Luhnow have been suspended by the league for one-year.  In addition, the league gave the following penalties to the Astros:
  • The forfeitures of first and second round draft picks in 2020 and 2021.
  • A fine of $5 million, the maximum allowed under MLB’s Constitution.
  • The placement of former Astros assistant GM Brandon Taubman on baseball’s ineligible list.
Approximately about an hour later, Astros owner Jim Crane fired Hinch and Luhnow.

"Neither one of them started this, but neither one of them did anything about it," Crane said.  He added, "We need to move forward with a clean slate."

Luhnow has been with the Astros organization since 2011.  The team won a World Series under his watch in 2017.

Big Savings for Big Fans at Fanatics.comLunhow said in a statement, “I did not know rules were being broken.  As the Commissioner set out in his statement, I did not personally direct, oversee or engage in any misconduct...the trash-can banging was driven and executed by players, and the video decoding of signs originated and was executed by lower-level employees working with the bench coach.”

"I am deeply upset that I wasn't informed of any misconduct because I would have stopped it” said Lunhow.  He also stated he was “not a cheater”.

Talk about a statement from Manfred to say to the league.

Alec Cora is being labeled as the “mastermind” of the sign stealing scandal.  Cora allegedly was instrumental in the camera being placed in centerfield and monitors being placed outside the dugout so players or managers could hit a trash can to let the batters know the pitches being thrown from the opposition.

So what does this all mean for Red Sox manager Cora?  It means that the league is expected to punish Cora more harshly than Hinch and Luhnow.  ESPN’s Jeff Passan is reporting the punishment for Cora will be “harsh”. Passan also reported, Cora’s punishment will be “far longer.”

It’s time for the Red Sox ownership to fire Alex Cora.  Plain and simple.

Manfred stated that “Cora was involved in developing both the banging scheme and utilizing the replay review room to decode and transmit signs,” Manfred said.  “Cora participated in both schemes, and through his active participation, implicitly condoned the players’ conduct.  I will withhold determining the appropriate level of discipline for Cora until after the DOI completes its investigation of the allegations that the Red Sox engaged in impermissible electronic sign stealing in 2018 while Cora was the manager,” according to The Athletic.

Between both 2017 and 2018, it’s clear Cora brought his sign stealing schemes to Boston.

If the Red Sox fire Cora, it’ll be interesting to see who’ll be the new manager, considering how close baseball is getting to Spring Training.

As a fan of the Boston Red Sox, if you are ok with Cora and these allegations, you need to look in the mirror.  It’s lazy to think and say “every team does this”.  It’s time to stop this and Manfred has laid the hammer down.

The Red Sox and the baseball world now awaits what’s next for Cora.  You fire Cora because this is a major black eye for the Red Sox organization and ownership's legacy.  John Henry, you’re up sir.  It’s time to take a stand and do what’s right.  The Red Sox need to fire Cora and league needs to ban him from Baseball.
