Red Sox Sign C Kevin Plawecki, DFA Sam Travis

The Boston Red Sox have agreed to sign free-agent catcher Kevin Plawecki.  The contract will be a Major League deal worth $900k for one year.  The 28-year-old Plawecki should serve as the back-up for Christian Vazquez.  The former first round pick spent four years in the Mets organization, where he hit .218 with 14 homer runs and 75 RBI in the four years he played in Queens.

Last season, Plawecki spent the year with the Tribe in Cleveland.  For the Indians he hit .222 with three home runs with 17 RBI.

Plawecki has played 272 big league games and all behind the dish, except for six games where he played first base.

MLBshop.com The Official Online Shop of Major League BaseballWhat’s ironic about the Plawecki signing is the fact he has a connection with former Sox catcher Sandy Leon.  In the Red Sox CBO’s first official trade he sent Leon to the Indians for minor league reliever Adenys Bautista.  The move was intended to save the Red Sox money.  Leon was expected to make around $3 million in arbitration.

The Indians elected to non-tender Plawecki to make room for Leon on the 40-man roster.  Plawecki and Leon flipping teams allows Bloom a cheaper alternative behind the dish.

Plawecki should serve as a better offensive option than Leon, but not by much.  Defensively both catchers are similar.  One has to wonder if Plawecki will serve as Chris Sale’s personal catcher, similar to Leon’s tenure with Sale and the Sox.

To facilitate Plawecki on the 40-man roster the Red Sox will DFA former prospect Sam Travis.

The Red Sox still have some holes to fill on the roster.  Travis projected as an option at first with both Mitch Moreland and Steve Pearce unlikely to return in 2020.

The 26-year old Travis spent his entire career in the Red Sox system.  Travis was the Sox second pick in the 2014 draft.  Travis made the club's Opening Day roster in 2019, appearing in 59 games over four stints in the big leagues.

Travis was out of options, so the harsh reality of moving on or even losing the slugging first baseman was likely to happen.

The Red Sox only have Michael Chavis and Bobby Dalbec on the 40-man roster that could play first for the Sox with Travis gone.  The Sox could look to former Yankee Greg Bird (check out my other article about Bird), former Cardinals and Nationals first baseman Matt Adams, or even extend an offer to bring back Moreland.

The Sox do have Josh Ockimey, who was in Pawtucket last season, and Nick Longhi, who is a former Sox prospect they resigned this offseason.  Longhi will provide depth at first and in the outfield.

The Red Sox now have seven days to trade, release or waive Travis.  If he goes unclaimed on waivers, the Sox will be able to retain his rights by outrighting him to Triple-A Pawtucket.

This offseason we have seen this style of move in Bloom’s first offseason with the team.  Plawecki is a good signing for the team, he’ll serve as a very serviceable backup for Vazquez.
