Report: Tom Brady Will Not Take a Hometown Discount

Brady on retirement: “I would say it’s pretty unlikely, hopefully unlikely”

During the entire run of the Patriots' dynasty, future Hall of Fame Quarterback Tom Brady has taken less than his market value for the better of the team.  That has helped land the Patriots six Super Bowl championships since 2001.

Brady is set to become a free agent for the first time of his career this March.  Brady will have the opportunity to potentially sign with another team other than the Patriots.

According to FOX Sports' Jay Glazer on the FOX Pregame Show on Sunday, Brady will reportedly not take a hometown discount with the Patriots.

Over the last 19 years, Brady has taken less money to facilitate a better roster around him.  In doing so, Brady has looked very selfless in a league where players want every last dollar they can get from any organization.

What team will land the 42-year old QB?  While that remains to be seen, it can be hard to believe Brady not returning to Foxboro.  But there has been a clear divide between him and the organization the last couple of seasons.

"I'm sure there are a lot of questions about the future.  Nobody has thought about the future," said Head Coach Bill Belichick.

That comment by Belichick is ludicrous.  Belichick has undoubtedly thought about life after Brady.

It remains to be seen if Brady and Belichick will be on the same page during any negotiations.  There is no obvious successor to the QB position for the Patriots.  The Patriots had Jarrett Stidham and Cody Kessler on the roster last season.

What would a new Brady contract look like?  Brady has stated he wants to play until he is 45.  Any team who wants to have Brady lead their offense will be looking at dishing out $25-$35m per year for his services.

The Chargers have to look like a favorite to land Brady.  The Chargers have a brand new stadium opening, Phillip Rivers is a free agent and will be moving on from Los Angeles.  If the Chargers offer Brady essentially whatever he wants, he could bolt for the Bolts.

There will be a handful of teams not named the Patriots who will attempt to sign Brady.  The thought of Brady not playing for the Patriots is absolutely mind blowing.  Brady is one of those iconic players that should only wear one uniform.  There has been a divorce brewing in Foxboro for some time now, and it feels like Brady wants to move on from Belichick and not the Patriots.
