Bruins Acquire Nick Ritchie, Fail to Land Palmeiri

The Boston Bruins completed a trade on Monday prior to the NHL Trade Deadline with the Anaheim Ducks for forward Nick Ritchie.  This is the second trade both hockey clubs have completed in the last couple of days.  The Bruins acquired winger Ondrej Kase on Friday to help give the Bruins additional offensive depth.

The Bruins are sending right winger Danton Heinen to the Ducks for Ritchie.  Ritchie is a former first round pick back in 2014 NHL Draft, the same draft the Bruins selected David Pastrnak.  In fact, Ritchie was selected 15 spots ahead of Pasta.

Ritchie has 19 points so far this season, he has eight goals and 11 assists in 41 games for the Ducks.  He also is signed through next season for $1.49 million.  The trade will save the Bruins around $1.3 million in salary, Heinen has a $2.8 million cap hit.

With the acquisition of Ritchie on Monday, the Bruins have added some physicality to their lineup.  Ritchie should slot into the third line with Charlie Coyle and Anders Bjork.  That could change if Kase doesn’t land on the second line to play with David Krejci on the second line.

Ritchie will be an added benefit to the Bruins third line with Coyle and Bjork.  He likes to get to the front of the net and Coyle could get him the puck.  Ritchie is a physical player who earns some penalty time, which will be an opportunity for him to work on in Boston.  But if he can score some goals on his new line, the Bruins fan base will be able to forgive the time Ritchie will spend in the box.

“He’s a guy that can get inside,” Bruins coach Bruce Cassidy said about his new forward to The Athletic.

The Bruins save money on this deal by trading Heinen.  The Bruins have been able to gain some additional flexibility with these last two trades for the remainder of this year and gain some room for next season.

Heinen heading to Anaheim could be the change of scenery he needs.  Injuries have prevented Heinen from consistency this year but he can score goals.  In his rookie year, Heinen scored 16 goals and had 47 points, so he has the ability to contribute offensively.

Bruins fans were hoping for something bigger from the Bruins today at the deadline.  The one player fans wanted to see in Boston was Devils forward Kyle Palmeiri.  Palmeiri would have been the perfect top six forward the team was looking for, but the Devils kept the winger.  The 29-year-old Palmeiri is owed $4.65 million and has 22 goals, 42 points in 57 games with the Devils.

The Bruins arguably lacked the first round pick the Devils would have wanted in return for Palmeiri.

One thing to note, Sweeney has been active every year in trying to improve his hockey club.  Sometimes the best deals are the ones you don’t make.  Kase and Ritchie are going help the Bruins.  Is it enough to help bring a Stanley Cup in Boston?  That remains to be seen, but the Bruins acquired two talented players in their deals with the Ducks.
