Bruins Added Ondrej Kase, What's Next For Sweeney and the Bruins?

The NHL Trade Deadline is Monday, February 28, 2020, and general manager Don Sweeney and the NHL-leading Bruins have struck one trade.  On Friday the Bruins traded veteran forward David Backes, 20-year-old prospect defensemen Axel Andersson and a first-round draft pick to Anaheim.  The Bruins acquired Ducks forward Ondrej Kase.

Kase, 24, is a two-way, right-shot winger that Sweeney was looking for to potentially add on David Krejci’s line.  Kase is also signed for this year and next at $2.6 million.  The concern around Kase has been his health.

The price the Bruins paid for Kase is high, but to shed 75% of Backes contract, Sweeney felt it was worth it.  The Ducks will pay Backes around $3 million next season, which will be the final year of his deal.  Both organizations got what they wanted out of the deal.

Backes gets the Bruins out of cap jail.  His contract was an albatross that should never have been signed in the first place.  Now the question remains, is Sweeney done?

My guess is no, Sweeney has been aggressive every year to better position his hockey club.  He did that last season by renting Marcus Johansson and trading for Charlie Coyle, who the Bruins locked up to an extension earlier this year.

What else remains on the trade block for the Bruins?

Chris Kreider of the Rangers is a possibility but it will cost a lot for the Bruins to rent him for the remainder of the season and the playoffs.  It wouldn’t be logical for the Bruins to give up the asking price the Rangers would want for Kreider.  There is also a possibility that the Kreider camp will come to terms on an extension with New York.

The risk would be worth the reward in the short term, but Sweeney has built a long term approach with the Bruins and I just don’t see him risking his assets for Kreider.  Colorado seems like the fit for the forward.

The Bruins could turn to the Sharks and bring back Joe Thornton for a last hurrah to win a Cup in Boston.  Thornton, who is now in his 22nd NHL season, has yet to win a championship.  The former Bruins center also expressed his desire to play beyond this season and come back for a 23rd NHL season.  He will become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season.

Thornton has a full no-trade clause in his contract, but if he has a legit chance to join a contender and potentially win a championship, I expect him to waive that.

If the veteran came back to Boston, he could try and fill the role Mark Recchi had the year the Bruins won the Stanley Cup.

The first shoe dropping in acquiring Kase was a solid move for Sweeney.  We will have to let the next couple days play out and see if the Bruins go big at the deadline or get depth to round out the roster.
