Betts Trade: Red Sox Prospect Connor Wong

The Red Sox have acquired three new players in the Mookie Betts trade to the Dodgers.  The club acquired Alex Verdugo, Jeter Downs and catching prospect Connor Wong.

Wong, who turns 24 in May, was selected by the Dodgers in the third round back in the 2017 MLB draft.  Wong, who was selected No. 100 overall out of Houston, was the third college player picked in that year's draft by the Dodgers.  He batted .281 with 24 home runs, seven triples and 82 RBI between High A and Double A last year.

Wong will be an interesting power bat added to the Red Sox farm system.  The athletic catcher was a shortstop at Houston and can also bring some versatility to the infield for the Red Sox.  While he was at Houston, he began his collegiate career at shortstop before sliding behind the dish for his last two years at school.

Baseball America described Wong as a player with a “wide-ranging tool set makes him tough to profile, but makes for an intriguing, versatile package.”

The last time the Red Sox had a player on their roster with a similar profile - former catcher turned utility player Blake Swihart.

Shop thousands of officially-licensed NHL items at“While he's strong for his size -- charitably listed at 5-foot-11 and 180 pounds -- he's small for a catcher and there's some concern about whether he'll be able to handle the workload of a long pro season,” his scouting report detailed. “If not, he fits the utility profile because he's capable of playing almost anywhere on the diamond.”

FanGraphs scouting report on Wong said, “He has average raw power but lifts the ball.  His approach is an issue and I think it’ll prevent him from being a full-time player, but his ability to catch and play on the infield will make him a cool role player who gives Boston’s big league roster defensive flexibility.”

Ultimately trying to project where Wong will end up playing in the Red Sox system is a challenge because of his versatility.  The Red Sox are thin at catcher within the system, so he could continue to develop there.  The organization currently has Christian Vazquez locked up for the next few seasons and is arguably a top five catcher in baseball.  He isn’t going anywhere yet.

If Wong’s bat can translate as he moves up within the Red Sox system, and he can play other positions other than catcher, he will be an added bonus to the Betts trade.

Wong was ranked 15th on the Dodgers’ Top 30 prospect list, but he sat behind the likes of Will Smith and Keibert Ruiz.  Wong was blocked by players which helped the Dodgers trade the prospect.

The Red Sox may have acquired an excellent catching prospect in Wong who immediately becomes Boston's best catching prospect in the system.  He mashed down in the minors last season and his potential to grow into a solid big leaguer is there.  Wong will need to work on striking out less, if he can reduce the amount of times he can swing and miss he’ll be considered a higher valued prospect.

The Dodgers arguably draft better than anyone in baseball.  The players the Red Sox received back for Betts weren’t a haul but a solid package of players to help the organization move forward.  If the Red Sox acquired a diamond in the rough in Wong, Bloom will have gotten a gem back for Betts.  This trade by Bloom will define his legacy in Boston.  It’ll be interesting to see how Wong will pan out for the Red Sox.
