Red Sox Acquire a Jeter of Their Own

Jeter Downs is Part of a Package That'll Send Betts to LA.

The Red Sox have acquired infielder Jeter Downs in the trade that send Mookie Betts to the Dodgers. The former Dodgers farmhand was a top five prospect in the Dodgers' system. The 21-year old Downs was one of the key pieces that Red Sox Chaim Bloom was looking for in return in the Betts deal.

The deal, which was finally made official as of Sunday, will see the Red Sox acquiring outfielder Alex Verdugo, catcher Connor Wong and Downs.  The Dodgers will receive Betts and David Price and will assume $48 million of the Price's contract.

Downs, who realistically is about a year away from the bigs, will give the Red Sox organizational depth at shortstop.  They don’t necessarily need that since the club has locked up Xander Bogaerts to a long term deal.  Downs could shift to second base, or potentially be a trade chip in a future deal for the Red Sox.

The Red Sox have young depth in their system to play second base, but Downs would be superior to what they have right now.  Downs should project more as a second baseman in the bigs.  If you couple that with his offensive upside, he has the potential to be a very good addition by Bloom and his front office.

This is also the second deal of notoriety that Downs has been involved in.  He was acquired by the Dodgers in the deal that send Matt Kemp, Yasiel Puig, Alex Wood and Kyle Farmer to the Reds.  The Dodgers acquired Downs, pitching prospect Josiah Gray and veteran right handed starter Homer Bailey.

Downs is a right-handed hitting infielder who was named after Yankees Hall of Fame shortstop Derek Jeter.  The Reds drafted him in the first round of the 2017 Draft and the signed him for $1.8 million.  According to MLB.com, they break down Down’s tools as he has the ability to hit for average and power.  He is able to hit the ball to his pull side and into both gaps.

The Reds failed to draft the correct Jeter the first time, passing on the former Yankees shortstop in the 1992 Draft.  The Reds had the pick before the Yankees and selected Chad Mottola.  The Yankees would pick next and select the Captain.  The Reds had a chance to select a “Jeter” again and they did.  Then they ultimately traded him as mentioned earlier.

Last season, Downs split time between Single and Double-A.  He played 107 games for the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes and hit .269 with 19 home runs, 75 RBI, 23 stolen bases and a slash line of .354/.507/.862.

Downs has another connection to his new organization.  His brother Jerry Downs is a first baseman that played for both Salem and Portland last season.

Hopefully this time the Red Sox don't get cold feet and pull out of this trade.  I don't think Red Sox fans could handle another rendition of this trade.

It’ll remain to be seen if Downs will be able to play up to his namesake.  The Red Sox are just hoping he can develop more in their system and provide them options on the major league roster for 2021.
