Red Sox New Catcher Lucroy Adds Depth and Leadership

The Red Sox agreed to terms with free agent catcher Jonathan Lucroy on Tuesday, a day after the Red Sox had a full squad at Spring Training.

Lucroy and the Red Sox came to terms on a minor league deal with an invitation to Red Sox camp this week.  He’ll provide depth behind starter Christian Vazquez and newly signed back-up Kevin Plawecki.

Odds are that Lucroy will not be able to crack the Red Sox 26-man roster, but the veteran will provide help to a position that lacked depth heading into this offseason.  Coming into the offseason, the Red Sox had Vazquez but no depth behind him at the Major League and minor league levels.  Chaim Bloom traded Sandy Leon to the Indians at the very beginning of the offseason.  Since that trade, the Red Sox have added Plawecki to a free agent deal, minor league free agent Jett Bandy, and prospect Connor Wong in the Mookie Betts trade to the Dodgers.

Lucroy will provide depth in Triple-A Pawtucket if he opts to head there if he is assigned by the Red Sox.  Odds are the veteran will opt out of the deal versus reporting to Pawtucket and platooning with Juan Centeno.

Last season, Lucroy, 33, split time between the Angels and the Cubs.  He hit .232 with eight home runs and 36 RBI in 101 games between the two clubs.

Despite him now being in his early thirties and he may not be the offensive player he once was, the veteran is a good addition for the Red Sox.  Lucroy, who has been known for his blocking and framing ability as a defensive catcher, has been below average the last three seasons, according to Baseball Prospectus.  Lucroy, though, is still a very good game-caller behind the dish.

The veteran will provide leadership with Vazquez and work with a lot of unknowns from a pitching perspective in Boston this spring.  Lucroy was also the man behind the plate back in 2018 when Sean Manaea tossed a no-hitter for the A’s against the Red Sox at the beginning of the World Series season.  He will be able to help Vazquez lead a mix of young unknown pitchers and veterans in Boston.

Lucroy is better known for his time with the Brewers.  He spent his first 6 1/2 seasons in Milwaukee.  Back in 2016, the Brewers were not in playoff contention and moved Lucroy to the Texas Rangers, who were making a playoff push.

Lucroy will now join the Red Sox big league camp with Vazquez, Plawecki, Centeno, Bandy, Wong and Rolandi Baldwin.
