Shop the Armed Forces Collection at MLBshop.com2019 Season:  Chavis burst onto the scene with a splash after being called up from Pawtucket on April 20th and added an immediate spark to a Red Sox team off to a lackluster start of the season.  He blasted six home runs in his first 14 games in the big leagues and was batting a lofty .354 with a 1.236 OPS while filling in at second base, a position he had only played sparingly in the minors.  The league quickly figured out that Chavis was susceptible to fastballs up and in and sliders down and away, and he hit the inevitable rookie slide.  While he continued to crush the occasional fastball left in the strike zone, his overall average plummeted quickly.  Injuries to Mitch Moreland and Steven Pearce, coupled with the return of Brock Holt, saw Chavis switch to first base later in the season and likely saved him from being sent back down to the minors.  A shoulder injury ended Chavis’ season on August 11th.

2019 Key Stat:  0.332 Ks/PA.  Chavis is part of the new trend in baseball players who don’t believe in making adjustments with two strikes to cut down on their swings to put the ball in play.  However, Chavis sported an impressive .347 batting average on balls put in play, good for 28th in the league. Manager Ron Roenicke has gone on record to say he believes Chavis can make the necessary adjustments by simply laying off the high fastball out of the strike zone.  Easier said than done.

BSS Red Sox Podcast TBNL 2020 OUTLOOK

Chavis will undoubtedly be looked upon as one of the players to help fill the void left by the trade of Mookie Betts.  Chavis projects to slot into either the sixth or seventh slot in the batting order.  The big question is where he will play in the field.  He was adequate at best at second base, and could share time there with newcomer José Peraza.  He should also see significant time at first base platooning with the returning Mitch Moreland, though Chavis had a higher batting average in 2019 against right handers than he did against left handers (.266 vs .226).  If he can cut down on his strikeouts he could be a solid contributor to the offense as a lower end of the order power threat.
